A Coy Decoy
Directed by Bob Clampett

Release Date:
June 7, 1941
Main Character(s):
Daffy Duck, Porky Pig
Summary:
In another “books come to life after closing hours” cartoon, cowboy Porky Pig opens the cartoon singing “Ride Tenderfoot Ride”. The main plot involves Daffy Duck trying to evade capture by “The Wolf of Wall Street” who attempts to lure him with a female duck decoy.
That’s Not All, Folks:
Porky only appears in the opening and ending scenes as this cartoon mostly focuses on Daffy.
All of the books seen at the start of the cartoon are all represented by the actual covers they had at the time, with the exception being “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” since it was used for an FHA-related gag.
This is one of two cartoons where Daffy appears in a books come to life cartoon, with the second being Clampett’s masterpiece, “Book Revue” (1946). Both cartoons also feature a similar opening with a shot of the book store along with a realistic pan of books with Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” playing.
What I Like About This One:
The lovely rendition of “Moonlight Sonata” at the start of the cartoon.
Porky as “The Westerner” singing “Ride Tenderfoot Ride”.
Daffy’s rendition of “I Can’t Get a Long Little Doggie”.
After Daffy rides “Black Beauty”, he gets bucked off into “The Lake” and says he “can’t even get one that’s- short” (instead of small like in the song) as his cowboy hat shrinks.
Daffy’s reaction to the duck decoy: “Well, beat me Daddy eight to the bar!”
The wolf taking the decoy away when Daffy starts romancing it, so Daffy unknowingly ends up cuddling with the wolf’s snout and doesn’t realize this until he feels the wolf’s teeth and looks at his reflection in the wolf’s nose.
Daffy trying to convince the wolf to not eat him by explaining that he is nothing but “skin and bones”, has spots before his eyes, a deviated septum, dandruff, B.O., dishpan hands, halitosis, a literally coated tongue (with a jacket), water on the knee and flat feet, ingrown toenails, and rejection from the army.
Daffy attempting to run into “Escape” only for it to be blocked by the wolf.
“The Bridge of San Luis Rey” being a literal bridge of teeth.
Daffy getting rid of the wolf by opening “Hurricane” causing him to get caught in a strong wind and for “Lightning” to strike him, which kills the wolf and has him lying dead in front of “For Whom the Bell Tolls”.
In the end, Daffy returns to “The Lake” with the decoy. Porky walks up to them and tells us, “That dumb duck! He’s been wasting his time around that decoy! Everybody knows that they can never possibly mean anything to each other!” Daffy scoffs at this as he and the decoy are followed by several decoy ducklings who all resemble Daffy. The last one retorts to Porky, “You and your education!"
