Along Flirtation Walk

Directed by Friz Freleng

Release Date:

April 6, 1935

Main Character(s):

None

Summary:

An all-bird cast. It’s Plymouth Rock College up against Rhode Island Red University in what appears to be a football game, but is actually an egg-laying contest.

That’s Not All, Folks:

A few in jokes include: “Armstrong’s Anchovies”, a reference to Tom Armstrong, who was head of the story department around this time, but was never credited, as well as “Ted’s Tamales”, a possible reference to storyman Tedd Pierce.

This is the first time “Frat” is used in a Warner cartoon (you’ll know it once you hear it; it’s the scene where the Plymouth Rock coach and players come marching out).

What I Like About This One:

The scene with the “Glee Club” ducks. Each one is wearing a shirt to spell out the letters for both words. The one with “G” and “C” for as the first letters as the respective words, realizes he’s in the wrong place, so has to go the correct spot before singing.

The premise of a football game played by birds actually being an egg-laying contest is pretty original.

The “NYAH” that comes from the coach of the Plymouth Rock team.

Plymouth Rock’s coach, a duck, is a really funny character. When he gets angry, he does unintelligible squawking (especially when he reprimands the players for their poor performance in the first half)
