The Bear's Tale

Directed by Tex Avery

Release Date:

April 13, 1940

Main Character(s):

None

Summary:

The story of the Three Bears gets mixed up with the story of Red Riding Hood when Goldilocks mistakenly goes to Grandma’s house. After the wolf tells her to beat it, he decides to go to the Three Bears’ house to eat her instead. Red informs Goldilocks via a note she finds, so Goldilocks leaves before the bears return. When the bears hear sneezing from upstairs, Papa Bear goes up to confront the intruder only for the bears to be scared out of the house when he discovers the wolf instead of Goldilocks.

That’s Not All, Folks:

The cartoon was given a Blue Ribbon reissue. When it was restored for the Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 5 DVD set in 2007, the original titles were put back in.

A brief snippet of Mendelssohn’s Spring Song plays whenever the narrator describes the setting as “the beautiful green forest”.

Avery himself voices Papa Bear and even uses the same laugh he used for the hippo in “Hamateur Night” (he would use the same laugh again when he voiced the big ghost in Jones’ “Ghost Wanted”, released later in 1940).

The wolf speaks in a Brooklyn accent.

What I Like About This One:

The rendition of “The Bear Went Over the Mountain” over the opening credits.

“Once upon a time, long long ago…”, a rendition of “Long Long Ago” then plays.

Papa laughing at the idea of everyone’s porridge being too hot only for him to find out the hard way upon eating it. It’s so hot that he puts his mouth to the faucet to cool his mouth down with a drink. But he turns it on hot instead of cold! Papa comments, “Hot stuff” and then laughs (animated by Robert McKimson).

After Mama puts her hat on, she turns the mirror around which shows her backside (animated by McKimson).

The bears all going out the same door which splits into three parts showing their respective heights.

Papa and Mama taking their feet off the pedals of the bicycle made for three that they’re riding, and Baby Bear tries to pedal hard to get it going.

Rod Scribner’s animation of the wolf telling Goldilocks, “No, this isn’t where the Three Bears live”.

After the wolf pushes Goldilocks out the door, explaining that he’s waiting for Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks asks, “What’s Red Riding Hood got that I haven’t got?” before walking off.

The wolf deciding to go after Goldilocks instead and calling for a taxi that just so happens to show up in the middle of the forest. He tells the driver to go “to the Three Bears’ house and step on it!” He then gets back out to add, “I’ll take care of any tickets.”

Papa imitating a siren and commenting that he sounds like a police car before he is smacked by Mama for his childish behavior.

After Red finds a note from the wolf (it even says “Reading time: 1 minute 20 seconds” on the note) explaining he got tired of waiting and went to go after Goldilocks, she calls Goldilocks and hands her the note by reaching across the split-screen. After shaking hands with Red, Goldilocks leaves before the bears return.

The bears suspecting robbers when they hear the wolf sneezing loudly in the bedroom. Papa goes upstairs to confront it, knowing that it’s “just a tiny little girl named Goldilocks”. He knows this because he happened to read the story the previous week in Reader’s Digest (animated by McKimson).

Papa’s reaction upon seeing the wolf in the bed (animated by Scribner). As the bears run away, with “the little bear behind”, Baby’s pants fall down, revealing his rear end.
