Boobs in the Woods

Directed by Robert McKimson

Daffy finds out the hard way that you should not remove someone’s engine as YOU might become the new motor; animation by Phil DeLara

Release Date:

January 28, 1950

Main Character(s):

Daffy Duck, Porky Pig

Summary:

Daffy Duck torments Porky Pig on his camping trip where Porky wants to do some still-life painting and fishing.

That’s Not All, Folks:

The production number is 1110 and was released as a Looney Tune.

The cartoon was given a Blue Ribbon reissue. In 2023, the original opening rings were found and can be viewed here.

The title is a pun for the 1932 Disney Silly Symphony cartoon, “Babes in the Woods”. When taken out of context, though, the title seems rather dubious. In this case, though, the term “boob” refers to someone foolish.

The cartoon reuses the premise of “My Favorite Duck”, where Daffy also heckles Porky, who is out camping. Both cartoons are also similar in that Porky eventually gets his revenge in the end.

You can find out who animated what scene here.

It’s somewhat ironic that Daffy sings about how crazy he is with this being his first cartoon released in the 1950’s as he was very soon about to move into his greedy jerk persona (which would become his main character trait for the rest of the decade and for pretty much all of the 1960’s).

The image on the title card-where Daffy is dressed in a Napoleon hat and outfit and Porky is one of the men in the white coats from the insane asylum trying to catch him-has nothing to do with the actual plot of the cartoon.

“Singing Down the Road” plays during the fishing sequence.

What I Like About This One:

We already get off to a fantastic start with Daffy singing about himself in tune to “The Merry Go Round Broke Down”: “Oh, people call me Daffy. They think that I am goony. Oh, just because I’m happy is no sign I’m looney tuney!”; “When people say I’m nutsy, it sure gives me a pain. Please pass the ketchup. I think it’s going to rain!”; “Oh, you can’t bounce a meatball. Don’t try with all your might. A-turn on the radio. I want to fly a kite!” He jumps into the lake in the middle of singing the last verse and goes underwater while finishing with singing “Good Evening, Friends!” and producing a sign, “See You Later!” (animated by Emery Hawkins)

Meanwhile, Porky has arrived at the landscape and comes out of his trailer to do some still-life painting (animated by Phil DeLara). After penciling it in first, Porky begins his painting (animated by Charles McKimson). Daffy sees what Porky’s doing and poses for him in the scenery he’s painting, so that Porky mistakenly ends up painting Daffy into the picture. Realizing this (animated by DeLara), Porky tells him to leave as he’s “cluttering up the scenery!” Daffy does so, telling him, “Okay. If you don’t want a shapely model, so long, Rembrandt” and leaves by riding an imaginary bicycle (animated by Charles).

Daffy comes up to Porky again and asks him various questions such as “Lake?”, “THAT lake?”, and “That’s MY lake”, with Porky absentmindedly agreeing to all of them with “Ah-hm”. Daffy suddenly starts raving, “You can’t go around paintin’ other peoples’ property! At least have the decency to ask me if you can paint it!” (animated by Pete Burness) Porky politely asks, “Okay then, m-m-may I PLEASE paint your lake?” (animated by Charles) Daffy answers no, and rubs the lake out of the painting. “The mountains are okay. I don’t own them”. After Porky reacts in annoyance, Daffy comes back disguised as the “Old Man of the Mountains”, who doesn’t want the mountains painted! Porky pulls off Daffy’s disguise while he’s in the middle of rubbing the mountains out of the painting and tells him, “W-wait here. I g-g-got something for you” and walks away doing an evil laugh (animated by Hawkins). “I like him. He’s crazy”, Daffy confides (animated by Charles).

Porky returns with a rifle: “Okay, d-d-duck. B-B-B-Bon voyagee!” Daffy dresses as a sheriff, who arrests Porky for “hunting ducks out of season” (animated by DeLara). He tells him, “That goes tough on ya around these parts” (animated by Charles) and calls for the “executioner” to behead Porky. Daffy returns disguised as said executioner and silently points to a log for Porky to put his neck on it. After Porky does (animated by Bill Melendez), he tells us, “Gosh. Th-th-they’re sure strict around here” (animated by Charles). Daffy removes his cloak and imitates Pocahontas, complete with Indian disguise and talking in a high-pitched voice, claiming Porky is Captain John Smith. When Porky reveals, “B-B-B-But Pocahontas, I’m not Captain John Smith”, Daffy reverts back to his normal voice, “Heh! Tryin’ to love ‘em and leave ‘em! This means war!” and starts whooping around like an Indian in the middle of a tribe dance. Porky slaps him down with “Ah, shut up!” and leaves. Daffy figures, “Heh. No sense of humor” (animated by Melendez).

Setting up a fishing line as it’s “n-no use trying to paint with that duck around here”, Porky decides to catch a fish. Daffy fiddles with it by shaking the line to ring the bell (animated by DeLara). Thinking a fish has been caught, Porky excitedly drops the logs he was bringing into his trailer, and trips over all his other stuff to get there only to find it “m-must’ve got off the hook” but as he walks away, he looks back smiling. Once Porky leaves, Daffy rings it again and hides. Porky becomes suspicious upon seeing nothing on the hook again, and leaves while looking back with an evil smirking expression. When Daffy rings it a third time, Porky peeks out from the rock Daffy was hiding behind and glares at him with a “Caught you red-handed!” expression. Realizing he’s been caught in the act, Daffy turns white in fear and starts screaming in incoherent bewilderment and doing wacky poses as Porky takes him (animated by Burness up to here) over to a tree stump to behead him (animated by Hawkins).

Before Porky can chop Daffy’s head off, Daffy rings a miniature bell that sounds exactly like the one on the fishing line. This time, Porky catches an actual fish- a big one, at that- much to Daffy’s shock. Daffy asks him if he has a fishing license (animated by Hawkins), which Porky reveals he does. Not only does he also have a dog license, but he also has a license to “sell hair tonic to bald eagles in Omaha, Nebraska”! (animated by Charles) When Porky reveals he’s not married after Daffy asks him if he has a marriage license, Daffy jumps into his arms and coyly asks, “What do ya say you and me go steady?” Disgusted at the idea, Porky demands Daffy to get off of him and throws a rock at him: “T-t-take that, you w-w-web-footed maniac!” (animated by Burness). Daffy turns this into a baseball game and addresses Porky as “DiMaggio”, encouraging him to slide to steal home. It’s not until Porky’s in the midst of sliding and falls into a mud puddle that he gets wise. “Hey! What am I sliding for? I’m not DiMaggio? My name is P-P-P-m-mud” (animated by Melendez)

Fed up, Porky decides to leave “before I’m as nutty as th-th-that duck!” (animated by Charles) While he’s putting his stuff in his trailer behind his car, Daffy removes the engine (animated by DeLara) and makes engine-like noises when Porky tries to start the car. Thinking “it m-must be the points”, Porky opens the hood (animated by Charles) and finds Daffy imitating the engine (animated by DeLara). After a fight inside the hood, Porky goes back to the driver’s seat but Daffy is still making the same noises. Porky then pulls on the “Choke” (animated by Charles) where Daffy, whose hands and feet are now tied to the working parts of the engine, is literally choked by a mechanical hand two times (animated by DeLara), allowing the car to finally start moving (animated by Charles). After getting choked a third time, Daffy rants, “He’s got no right to do this to me!” An official license then appears in front of him, “Porky Pig: Permit to Use Daffy Duck As Motor”. “What a revoltin’ development this is!”, Daffy sulks before he is choked again (animated by DeLara). Porky informs the audience, “W-when we get to California, I’'ll have his v-v-valves ground” as he once more pulls on the “Choke” (animated by Charles).
