Boulevardier from the Bronx
Directed by Friz Freleng
Release Date:
October 10, 1936
Main Character(s):
None
Summary:
It’s Hickville against the Giants in a baseball game. The Giants’ star player, the cocky Dizzy Dan, keeps showing off and arrogantly crowing at the Hickville player, Claude, and making his girlfriend fall for him.
That’s Not All, Folks:
This is the very first cartoon to use “Merrily We Roll Along” as the Merrie Melodies theme.
This is the first cartoon to use a blue Warner Bros. shield, and blue rings (replacing the red shield and purple rings used for the previous Merrie Melodies from 1936) and the only cartoon to use a unique opening variant of the Merrie Melodies rings.
Claude’s girlfriend resembles Emily from “Let It Be Me”.
Babe Ruth is caricatured as a pig.
What I Like About This One:
When Dizzy Dan’s train overshoots the platform, the Hickville citizens simply push the station to where his train actually stopped.
The letters in “Hickville Band” bouncing off a drum when the drum player beats it.
Dizzy Dan having his arm carried on a pillow when he makes his way to the field.
A turtle being the catcher.
One of the Giants players being a dog with a long body so one end of his body is at one base and his other end is at another base.
Dizzy Dan intentionally getting two strikes and when he hits the ball, his hit propels Claude backward into the fence. Dizzy Dan then takes his time, due to how fast he is (he gets called “safe” at the very last second).
“Dizzy has walked three men just to get at Claude”.
The incredibly satisfying ending: Claude hits a home run, and wins the game for Hickville. He then crows in Dizzy Dan’s face.
