Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs
Directed by Bob Clampett
Release Date:
January 16, 1943
Main Character(s):
None
Summary:
An all-black parody of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs with the wicked Queen being a hoarder of several items rationed during the war, her daughter “So White” befriending the Seven Dwarfs who are in the Army, and Prince “Chawmin’” who has dice for teeth.
That’s Not All, Folks:
This is one of two cartoons in the Censored Eleven directed by Clampett. The other one is “Tin Pan Alley Cats” (released later in 1943), which stars a cat who is a caricature of Fats Waller.
Despite the racial stereotypes, the cartoon is often praised by several animation historians. It was ranked number 21 of the 50 Greatest Cartoons and is in the 100 Greatest Looney Tunes Cartoons book. However, if I had to say what cartoon I think is overrated, it would certainly be this one. It’s not bad by any means, but I think there are a ton of cartoons released before and after this one that are a lot better.
The cartoon has a special ending where the “That’s all folks!” end card is seen on the same background of the start of the cartoon where a black woman is telling her child the story.
Fats Waller and Stepin Fetchit are caricatured as two of the dwarfs.
The queen imitates Jimmy Durante when she disguises as an apple saleslady when she sells a poisoned candied apple to So White.
Due to being produced during World War II, the company “Murder Inc.” (which will kill anybody) advertises that they wipe out the Japanese for free.
What I Like About This One:
Danny Webb’s voice for the Queen as it makes her sound very deep, masculine, and un-lady like.
A bottle of gin is labeled as “Eli Whitney’s Cotton Gin”.
Prince Chawmin’s limo’s wheels being made up of multiple shoes on a wheel.
The Queen being so outraged at Prince Chawmin’ falling for So White that she politely calls Murder Inc. in a sweet voice before switching to her normal voice in an angry tone to “blackout So White” before biting the telephone out of rage.
A yellow stripe flashing down Prince Chawmin’s back when So White is kidnapped.
So White ends up being left in the forest unharmed due to having smothered the entirety of Murder Inc. with kisses.
The Seven Dwarfs all fainting when So White kisses them.
After the Queen injects a candied apple with poison, a worm coming out of it coughing: “Man, that smells like limburger cheese!” and a few “Refoogees” (more worms) move out of it. To this, the Queen laughs evilly.
At the Seven Dwarfs’ camp, the sun bounces up in tune to “Reveille”.
After So White eats the poisoned apple and is unconscious, the Dwarfs shoot at the Queen by means of shooting an artillery shell with the smallest Dwarf popping out of it and knocking the Queen out with a mallet.
Try as he might, Prince Chawmin’s kisses fail to wake up So White and this eventually tires him out to the point of rapidly aging. The smallest Dwarf’s kiss wakes her up instead. How was he able to wake her up? His answer is “That is a military secret!” (animated by Rod Scribner)
