Release Date:
January 23, 1943
Main Character(s):
Porky Pig
Summary:
Officer Porky Pig and his constantly-about-to-sneeze dog, Eggbert, trail “Missing Lynx”, a master of disguise and a spy for the Nazis, who is trying to blow up a bridge with a bomb.
That’s Not All, Folks:
This is Porky’s last solo black and white cartoon.
The title is a play on words for “Confessions of a Nazi Spy”.
The bomb is labeled “Hallelujah, I’m a Bomb”. This is a reference to the song “Hallelujah, I’m a Bum”.
The cartoon was originally titled “Confessions of a Nutsy Spy”.
This is one of two instances where both Porky and Daffy appear in the opening rings, but only Porky appears in the actual cartoon. This also occurred with the original titles of “Swooner Crooner” (1944).
What I Like About This One:
The first minute of the cartoon is devoted to visual gags in Porky’s office such as the “fingerprint department” being paint-covered hand prints on the wall, a jar labeled “Sure Cure for Criminal Tendencies- Apply with a Jerk” has a noose inside, Exhibit “A” is a large letter A, “Crime Club” is the weapon kind of club, and a sexy pin-up of a swimsuit clad woman has her own wanted poster (“And you ain’t kiddin’ brother!”- Signed US Army).
Literal “Z”’s coming out of Eggbert’s snoring mouth.
When the radio abruptly turns on, Eggbert attempts to shut it off only for the radio to stop what they’re announcing and scold, “Ah, ah, ah, ah. Don’t touch that dial!” So Eggbert destroys it with a mallet instead.
Porky calling for Eggbert and instructing him to get on his toes. Not wanting to get out of bed, Eggbert cringes the second his toes touch the floor (animated by Cal Dalton).
The first time Eggbert is about to sneeze, Porky is shown to have a first aid cabinet labeled “Sneeze Preventer”. He uses a plunger with a hand on the other end where its finger is positioned under Eggbert’s nose. Despite this, he gives out a loud sneeze anyway, knocking both Porky and the door down.
After Porky falls out the door due to Eggbert’s sneeze, the flyer for Missing Lynx flies into the face of the very spy.
Eggbert sniffing at a tree that has a random man hiding under it and walking off.
Another tree has Lynx hiding under it and he has to go back to prevent Eggbert from sneezing.
Lynx’s head popping out from behind a tree at such split seconds that two Lynxs are seen at one point, much to their surprise.
Lynx’s binoculars staying suspended in mid-air when he rubs his hands together sinisterly.
Porky questioning a disguised Lynx about the real Lynx while Eggbert digs around in Lynx’s kit (which includes a Hitler mask that Eggbert holds his nose over).
Eggbert’s next sneeze blows him and Porky backwards (animated by Dalton) with Eggbert’s rope hanging off a branch from a cliff.
Lynx’s watch is labeled “Spy Time Is Your Time”.
When Porky catches up to Lynx, Lynx disguises as Porky and shoos him away.
Lynx warning Porky there is one minute until 3:00 (the time the bomb is expected to go off) and asking him if he sees “that little bag”. Porky points over in the opposite direction, “You mean that one?”, where it’s revealed that Eggbert is now carrying it in his mouth!
Lynx tosses away the bag to avoid getting caught in the explosion but Eggbert quickly catches it and keeps trying to bring it back to Lynx.
After witnessing Lynx run into a cave with a very small entrance, Porky comments on how suspicious he acts and upon hearing the bag tick, he is scared to realize that the package is “A BOMB!”
Porky then runs into the same cave and when Lynx hears a thumping noise, Porky reassures him it’s his heart beating. But more ticking is heard where it’s revealed that Eggbert has followed them inside (animated by Dalton).
Eggbert’s final sneeze leaves Porky hanging from a railroad sign with Lynx flying into a cave wall. The bomb lands next to him via parachute but instead of blowing up, it proves to be a dud. Angered at this, Lynx repeatedly slams it on the ground while ranting. It only now explodes, sending Lynx up into the clouds where he is happy that it does work. He then falls over with his feet forming the “V” for Victory.
