Directed by Robert McKimson

Animation by Manny Gould

Release Date:

March 26, 1949

Main Character(s):

Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Barnyard Dawg

Summary:

Porky Pig and Barnyard Dawg go hunting ducks, and are heckled by Daffy Duck. After Daffy lets Dawg take him to Porky, he is brought home and put in the freezer. Dawg is convinced by his angel conscience to let Daffy out, but Daffy proceeds to get Dawg in trouble with Porky.

That’s Not All, Folks:

The production number is 1078 and was released as a Looney Tune.

The cartoon was given a Blue Ribbon reissue.

This is the second cartoon where Dawg is Porky’s dog and his second appearance outside of a Foghorn Leghorn cartoon, with the first being “One Meat Brawl”.

Dawg has a different voice in this cartoon. He would also have a different voice in Foghorn’s fourth appearance, “Henhouse Henery” (released less than four months later). Dawg would gain his permanent voice in “The Leghorn Blows at Midnight” (1950).

The title is a combination of Daffy’s full name and duck hunt.

You can find out who animated what scene here.

The cartoon makes usage of the “devil and angel consciences” gag. This scene is also a rare occurrence where someone being out of character is very funny. In this case, Dawg’s angel conscience tells the devil conscience, “Ah, shut up!” before they both fade away.

Due to Daffy’s name being in the title, it’s just “Porky Pig in” instead of “Porky Pig and Daffy Duck in” above the title.

During the scene where Daffy jumps out of the freezer disguised as Santa and gets Porky and Dawg to sing with him to “Jingle Bells”, only for Porky to find out that it’s April, the April calendar erroneously has 31 days, despite the fact that April only has 30 days.

This is one of the last cartoons where Daffy is his original, screwball self. While he would still have this persona in a few cartoons from the early 1950’s, he would soon become the greedy jerk who frequently uses “despicable”.

This is one of two cartoons where Daffy sings “The Latin Quarter” while in drag. The other is in the equally superb “Daffy’s Inn Trouble” (1961), also directed by McKimson.

What I Like About This One:

As Porky is using a duck call, a large duck decoy appears and Daffy pops out of it, before he empties out all of Porky’s shot gun shell. After doing this, Daffy walks off and does a Lew Lehr impression: “Duck hunters is da cwaziest peoples!” (animated by Phil DeLara)

Seeing Daffy in the air, Porky loads his gun (animated by John Carey), as Daffy calls to him, “Yoo-hoo, Fat Boy! Here’s your target for tonight!” and does “me power dive” where he zooms down like a dive bomber as Porky shoots at him (animated by DeLara). Believing he got him, Porky does a wild take upon realizing this is not the case when he sees (animated by Carey) Daffy flying across with a banner reading, “That’s What You Think” (animated by Charles McKimson).

Daffy later appears behind them dressed in a tutu and singing “The Latin Quarter” (animated by Pete Burness with Carey animating the shot of Daffy putting the tutu on). Porky and Dawg only give dirty looks (animated by Carey) as Porky shoots at a target that appears on Daffy’s underwear that is part of the disguise. Daffy fakes being shot and starts saying, “I’m a-goin’” but then reverts to “G’bye now!” and runs off (animated by Burness).

Porky throws his gun down in fury and orders Dawg to go after Daffy (animated by Carey). After running across via a camera pan (animated by Burness), Dawg looks through the reeds and sees Daffy sitting down in a relaxing pose. He confides to us, “Hmm, one of those wise quacking ducks, huh? I’ll show HIM a trick or two” (animated by Charles). Dawg goes into a tantrum-throwing fit, which causes Daffy to come over and ask him, “Why the copious flow of lachrymal fluid, my garrulous canine?” Dawg answers, “If I don’t bring back a duck, he’ll torture me!” (animated by DeLara). Daffy offers to help him out by making it look like Dawg caught him. After getting in Dawg’s mouth, Daffy warns, “Be careful of those fangs, Lassie. I bruise like a grape”. Porky is pleased with Dawg and finds that Daffy is “not a v-v-very healthy-looking specimen”. This offends Daffy, who quietly mutters in anger (animated by Charles).

Getting back to the house, Porky puts Daffy in the freezer (which emits a literal blizzard every time it’s opened) labeled “Deep Freez Unit” to keep him fresh for dinner. As Porky goes off to rest, Dawg hears some rapping noises from inside the freezer. His devil conscience appears in a poof of smoke on his left cheek (animated by Carey) and encourages, “Attaboy, Jack! You tricked that duck good! Now you’re all set with your master! What’s a duck more or less?” (animated by Manny Gould) Knowing what’s coming next, Dawg covers his ears as his angel conscience appears in a separate poof of smoke on his right cheek (animated by Charles). The angel conscience advises, “Don’t leave that poor duck in there. He’s your friend. He helped you when you needed help. You could at least let him get warmed up a little”. The devil conscience tries to get Dawg to ignore this, “Ah, don’t pay no never minds to that sissy talk! Let him freeze!” The angel conscience angrily comes up to him and tells him, “Ah, shut up!” and shoves his keys over his arms, rendering the devil conscience stuck (animated by Gould).

Dawg decides, “Well, I could let him warm himself a bit. And then put him back”. He opens the freezer and grabs a snow-covered Daffy before putting him in the oven. After finding Daffy basting himself, Dawg takes him out as Daffy shakes his hand, “Well, we put him over, chum! Fooled him good! Well, good luck! Gotta run along now!” (animated by DeLara) Dawg stops him, “You’re not goin’! You gotta stay for dinner!” Daffy says, “That’s mighty hospitable of ya! But a guy’s waitin’ for me! Hasty la vista!” (animated by Charles)

Daffy attempts to run out the door, but is stopped by Dawg, who declares, “You’re NEVER leavin’!” (animated by Charles) He also stops Daffy at the window above the sink and at a mouse hole. Daffy asks, “What’s this all about, ya big-” as Dawg desperately tries to get him to be quiet. Daffy tells him off, “Don’t shush ME! I’ll make all the noise I wanna! Yahoo! Yippee! Hooray! Hoo-hoo! Hoo-hoo! Yahoo! Yee-hee! Hoo-hoo! Hoo-hoo!” and then starts banging a pot like a drum in a marching band (animated by Burness).

Porky shouts from down the stairs, “Hey, w-w-what’s goin’ on down there?” (animated by Charles) Daffy jumps into Dawg’s mouth as Porky comes down and yanks Dawg offscreen. “I’ll t-t-teach you to steal ducks!” After presumably attacking Dawg, Porky warns him to not let it happen again (animated by Gould) before putting Daffy back in the freezer (animated by Carey).

Dawg reopens the freezer and Daffy jumps out wearing a scarf and mittens. Daffy then goes overdramatic: “What a trip. What a trip! Blizzard all the way. Snow twenty feet deep (animated by Carey), but we had to get that serum through! It was mush, mush, mush all night.” He then picks Dawg up while shouting, “Come on! Mush! Mush! Mush! Mush! Mush!” After putting Dawg down, he finishes with an even more dramatic climax: “Suddenly the glacier cracks! There’s a roar! Tons of ice! No escape! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” Seeing Dawg give him a “seriously?” look, Daffy asks in a normal tone, “How have things been with you?” (brilliantly animated by Gould)

Porky again goes down to see what all that racket is as Daffy jumps back in Dawg’s mouth (animated by Gould). In a great shot of Porky angrily coming towards Dawg in the latter’s perspective, Porky assumes Dawg didn’t learn his lesson and decides to try again by doing the same thing as before. He again puts Daffy back in the freezer (animated by Carey).

This time, Dawg goes to the freezer with an ax (animated by Charles) as Daffy pops out of it, saying “Ta-da!” Dawg chases Daffy upstairs with the ax (animated by DeLara), and ends up only splitting the door to the room Porky is silently sleeping in. Daffy takes a plant out of its pot, lifts Porky’s head off the couch he’s sleeping on, puts the pot on Porky’s head, and imitates Dawg barking. Dawg comes in and attempts to hit Daffy with the ax, but Daffy dodges the attempt, causing Dawg to hit Porky. Thinking Dawg was responsible for putting the pot on his head and hitting him with the ax, Porky has finally had enough: “B-B-B-Benedict Arnold! T-t-t-traitor!” (animated by Burness) and chases Dawg down the stairs with the ax (animated by Carey).

Porky finds Dawg by the freezer unintelligibly praying for mercy and having written out his will. He threatens, “If th-th-that duck’s gone this time, (makes throat cutting noise)” (animated by Charles). When the freezer is opened once more, Daffy comes out dressed as Santa and starts singing “Jingle Bells”. Porky and Dawg join in, but Porky stops upon seeing (animated by Gould) the calendar and that it’s the middle of April! (animated by Charles) He wrestles Daffy and is about to do him in with the ax: “I’ll make this time that you’re d-” but makes a wild take upon seeing something (animated by Gould). Daffy has a “Do Not Open Till Xmas” sticker on his crotch as he ends the cartoon with, “Christmas. By that time, I’ll figure a way out of this mess!” (animated by Charles)
