Egghead Rides Again

Directed by Tex Avery

Release Date:

July 17, 1937

Main Character(s):

Egghead

Summary:

Cowboy wannabe Egghead gets thrown out of his boarding house for making too much noise. He literally mails himself to the Bar-None Ranch in Wahoo, Wyoming for a job as a cowboy. Despite fumbling up the tasks he’s assigned, he gets the job but it’s not what he thinks it was going to be.

That’s Not All, Folks:

This is the first appearance of Egghead. He would lead to the creation of Elmer Fudd.

This is the first cartoon to use the mid-1937 rendition of “Merrily We Roll Along” and the first cartoon to use the zooming WB shield sound effect.

Irven Spence, who would become one of the top animators of MGM’s Tom and Jerry cartoons of the 1940’s and 1950’s, does some of his first animation for a Warner Bros. cartoon here (he left the studio at the end of the 1930’s and went over to MGM). He animated the opening and ending scenes.

“The Merry Go Round Broke Down” plays when Egghead gets on a small horse to pursue the calf.

What I Like About This One:

Egghead seemingly riding a horse but he’s actually bouncing on a pogo stick in front of a Western background on a calendar.

The clerk saying “Dadburn” a lot.

The Pony Express carrying a trailer.

The cowboys at the ranch opening the envelope and Egghead falling out of it (as to how he fit in there, you have to suspend disbelief).

When Egghead does a shooting test (struggling to pick up the gun at first), the cowboy he shoots at hides in his hat (with his boots still on the ground), waves a white flag, and gets his whole body down from the hat which was still in mid-air.

When Egghead is made to brand the calf, he brands the other cowboys instead while the calf walks away unbranded.

Egghead trying to tie up the calf, but he gets tied up instead.

Egghead gets the job- as cleaner for the ranch’s animals! He says “Buck Egghead… sweeps again.”

The music that plays over the “That’s all folks!” end card.
