Directed by Bob Clampett
Release Date:
December 16, 1939
Main Character(s):
Porky Pig
Summary:
Porky Pig is sent by his mother to the store to pick up a loaf of bread and a bottle of milk on the same day that kids are admitted free at the theater. He of course goes into the theater and views various newsreels.
That’s Not All, Folks:
The cartoon reuses a few gags and animation from “She Was an Acrobat’s Daughter” (interestingly, this cartoon is presented right after “She Was an Acrobat’s Daughter” on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 3 DVD set).
The newsreel for the “Masked Marvel” is footage from “The Lone Stranger and Porky” along with new animation used for this cartoon (another interesting note is that that cartoon was the first one of 1939, while this was the last Porky cartoon of 1939 and the whole decade).
A poster outside the theater advertises, “Looney Tunes- the Supreme of the World”. Another one advertises, “Looney Tune Tonight”.
The screening begins with “Warmer Bros. Presents Looney Tone News”. There is also “Vita-Tone News”, a reference to Vitaphone, the sound recording system for the Warner Bros. cartoons.
What I Like About This One:
The advertisement on the marquee reading “The Broken Leg” starring “a large cast”.
Trolleys for passengers coming to the theater opening up like sardine cans.
A snooty dog owner stating she never goes into the movies only to be dragged in by her equally snooty dog who becomes excited upon learning of a film about trees.
While Porky is walking along his way to the store, he mixes up “kids admitted free” in saying “loaf of bread, bottle of milk” over and over again, before realizing “KIDS ADMITTED FREE!?” and running in to the theater.
A title card for a newsreel reading, “ Eightnine Ten- Scientist Discovers That Short Tempered Doctors Always Lose Their Patients”.
Professor Wisebottom having invented a microscope that allows one to see germs swimming in the human bloodstream like they’re at a beach.
Porky’s troubles with viewing the screen. First, he’s too far away to see what’s going on, then he sits in a seat with a poor angle of the screen.
“J. Pretzel Pumpernickle, Retired Baker, Never Spends A Penny Although He No Longer Kneads the Dough”- He cheats a claw game of five cents, causing the claw to shake all the money he has out of him.
The Masked Marvel and “Sterling” deciding to take the respective low and high roads before going into a duet of “You Take the High Road and I’ll Take the Low Road”.
A mischievous duckling in the audience slingshotting Sterling in the behind with a rock.
When the usher receives a call from Porky’s mother, he goes to announce to the audience if there is a little boy in the audience who was sent to the store by his mother, he’d better get home. At this, everyone rushes out, causing the theater to literally deflate.
