The Fire Alarm
Directed by Jack King
Release Date:
November 23, 1935
Main Character(s):
Beans, Ham and Ex
Summary:
Beans’ offscreen sister, Lizzie, sends her twin sons, Ham and Ex (the twin puppies from “I Haven’t Got a Hat”), to the fire station where Beans is one of the firemen while she is out shopping. Ham and Ex cause all sorts of trouble for the firemen.
That’s Not All, Folks:
This is the first cartoon to have “That’s all folks!” written out instead of being said by a character.
This is also the first cartoon to feature the famous sound effect that would later be used for Taz many years later.
The cartoon very unfortunately has one of the laziest restoration jobs in terms of soundtrack (visually, the cartoon looks excellent). It was sourced from an old TV print that aired on Nickelodeon in the 1990’s, so it uses the wrong opening and closing themes, and removes the music over the title card (which featured clanging sounds to resemble a bell). You can listen to the original opening soundtrack here.
What I Like About This One:
While Ham and Ex fight over a fire hat, a hatchet can be seen in the background with the label, “For Furniture Only”.
Ham (or Ex) getting a boot stuck on his head. Then Ex (or Ham) gets it stuck on his head.
The “hose rewind” gag.
Beans pacing after he catches Ham and Ex, and then he suddenly yells “Quiet!”
One of the firemen being woken up by his pants.
Beans tricking Ham and Ex into exposing themselves for the trouble they’ve caused.
