Ghost Wanted
Directed by Chuck Jones

Release Date:
August 10, 1940
Main Character(s):
None
Summary:
A little ghost goes to get a job at haunting a house at 1313 Dracula Drive but ends up getting spooked by the big ghost who lives there.
That’s Not All, Folks:
The cartoon was not restored for HBO Max, but was restored by Warner Archive for the Looney Tunes Collector’s Choice Volume 2 Blu-ray set in 2023.
Tex Avery voices the big ghost, making this one of the very few instances where he voices a character in a cartoon he didn’t direct.
The big ghost is also a caricature of Jones.
The cartoon was rumored to have inspired the creation for Casper the Friendly Ghost, who debuted in 1945 at Paramount/Famous Studios, although he actually existed as far back as the 1939 children’s book, “The Friendly Ghost”, which was written by Casper’s creator, Joe Oriolo.
The little ghost doesn’t have any lines of dialogue, making him a mute character.
Most of the cartoon’s soundtrack was released on The Carl Stalling Project Volume 2 CD.
What I Like About This One:
The haunting atmosphere in general makes this a good watch for the Halloween season.
The little ghost’s newspaper being called the “Saturday Evening Ghost” and having “Haunt Ads”.
The address of the haunted house being “1313 Dracula Drive” with working hours being midnight to four o’clock in the morning.
Although being a ghost gives him the ability to walk through doors, the little ghost still comes back out to shut his door to his bedroom.
The little ghost changing from a white sheet to a blue sheet and is invisible as he undresses.
After the little ghost goes through his front door, he goes back in to lock it anyway.
The big ghost becoming invisible as he interviews the little ghost, offers him a cigarette, and the big ghost’s smoke spells out “BOO”.
As the little ghost attempts to scare the big ghost, the big ghost becomes visible again and startles the little ghost by shouting “BOO!” behind his back.
The little ghost receiving a telegram. It’s from the big ghost of course and it unsurprisingly says, “BOO!”
The big ghost’s attempt to startle the little ghost with firecrackers ends up backfiring when a discarded match ignites the fireworks in the big ghost’s back pocket, turning him into a whizzing fireball that chases the little ghost out of the house. The big ghost then cools off in a well, and lets out a sigh of relief as he comes back up.
The little ghost running all the way back to his own house, going through the door again, but coming back out to lock it, pull the welcome mat in, and hang an “Out to Lunch” sign on the door.
