Goin' to Heaven on a Mule
Directed by Friz Freleng
Release Date:
May 19, 1934
Main Character(s):
None
Summary:
A lazy plantation worker dreams that he enters heaven, but then has to go to the other place when he drinks from the forbidden tree.
That’s Not All, Folks:
Obviously, the cartoon is no longer shown on television due to black stereotypes. However, it is not in the Censored Eleven, due to it not being in the Associated Artists Productions package (which consisted of all the Harman-Ising Merrie Melodies and all of the color Warner Bros. cartoons released before August 1948). Had it been in that package, it easily would have been one of the Censored Eleven.
What I Like About This One:
The animation and the music are always a strong point in 1930’s cartoons, and luckily this is no exception.
The gag with the flies was pretty amusing.
This is the first time we see a “devil and angel conscience” gag.
The Fuller Brush Man not being let in and having the door shut on his foot.
Where Can I Watch It?
At archive.org! (contains racial stereotypes. Viewer discretion is advised.)
