Summary:

A three-way chase between Tweety, Sylvester, and a bulldog leads to them all ending up in the Animal Hospital with a cast on their leg, and with Granny as the nurse, due to the chase going out into traffic. Despite being in a cast, Sylvester is still determined to get Tweety. Sylvester and the bulldog also don’t let their casts stop them from fighting.

The cartoon was given a Blue Ribbon reissue. It is also the latest cartoon to receive a reissue, so every cartoon after this survives with their complete original opening credits fully intact.

This is one of the few Tweety and Sylvester cartoons where Granny appears, but she doesn’t own either of them.

This cartoon is one of Freleng’s personal favorites.

The cartoon’s premise would be reworked in the final cartoon of DePatie-Freleng’s “The Ant and the Aardvark” series, “From Bed to Worse” (1971).

This is the last cartoon to use the 1956-1957 orange rings with the green background.

The cartoon was used in the 1983 compilation movie, “Daffy Duck’s Movie Fantastic Island”.

The nineteenth episode of “Looney Tunes Dash” had a similar title to this cartoon, “Greedy for Speedy”. It was also the second episode with Speedy as the playable character.

Favorite Scene:

After Granny gives Sylvester some sleeping pills, Sylvester keeps seeing the bulldog walk up to him with a wooden stick from the other side of the room and getting closer and closer every time he opens his eyes. Eventually, the bulldog slams Sylvester’s cast with the stick.

What Happens in This One:

Tweety runs around a corner, stopping to catch his breath while panting, “I tawt… I taw… a putty tat!” He continues running once Sylvester comes around the corner, chasing him on all four’s, with Sylvester being chased by the bulldog. The chase ends up going out into traffic where numerous sound effects are heard offscreen, presumably ending with them causing a vehicle accident and them getting injured from it. An ambulance for the Animal Hospital is then driving down the road (animated by Arthur Davis).

Both Sylvester and the bulldog are in hospital beds of their own with miserable expressions and with their respective right feet in casts. Tweety is in a cast bed of his own in a birdcage on the ceiling and his right foot being in a cast. He is peeved about his predicament as he shoots Sylvester a dirty look and sulks, “Bad ol’ putty tat!” (animated by Davis) Granny comes in, being the nurse assigned to them, “Good morning! And how are my patients today?” She pats the bulldog’s foot while asking, “And how’s the doggy’s limb this morning?” The bulldog exclaims in pain from this, with Granny responding, “Oh, still tender, eh? Well, maybe that will teach you to stop chasing the pussycat!” She does the same thing with Sylvester, “And how’s the (chuckles) pussyfoot today?” Sylvester also exclaims in pain from his foot being patted. “Still sensitive?”, Granny asks before she scolds, “Well, now maybe you’ll leave that little birdie alone! I hope this teaches both of you a lesson!” She walks over to Tweety and cranks his bed to prop him up a bit, “Oh, the poor little Tweety bird. Let’s make you a little more comfortable”. Granny then leaves while telling them, “Now you be good boys and get some rest!” (animated by Gerry Chiniquy)

The second Granny shuts the door behind her, Sylvester looks up at Tweety with an evil glare (animated by Chiniquy) and begins walking over to his cage with a cane. Tweety remarks, “Uh oh. I don’t wike the wook in that putty tat’s eyes!” (animated by Virgil Ross) The bulldog growls and snarls at Sylvester when he passes by his bed, to which Sylvester responds with, “Ah, shut up!”, and whacks the bulldog’s cast with his cane. The bulldog screams in immense pain as Sylvester continues on his way to the cage. Having heard the bulldog’s screams, Granny is heard wondering, “What’s going on in there!?”, forcing Sylvester to quickly limp his way back to bed with the cane, and fake being asleep when Granny comes in to investigate. Granny figures, “My! I must be hearing things!”, and leaves (animated by Chiniquy with Davis animating all shots of Granny).

Sylvester walks over to Tweety with the cane a second time, and is again growled and snarled at by the bulldog. He is about to whack the bulldog’s cast again as he asks angrily, “Didn’t I tell you to shut-”, but the bulldog gets the jump on him and hits Sylvester’s cast with a long wooden stick. Sylvester jumps around in pain while clutching his leg (animated by Chiniquy), with Granny coming in to see what the commotion is. Sylvester ends up landing in her arms as Granny remarks, “My, my! You must be in TERRIBLE pain!”, oblivious to Sylvester shooting an angry glare at the bulldog. She carries him off, “We’ll just get you back into bed and give you something to make you sleep!” Sylvester uses a pair of scissors to cut the rope holding the bulldog’s injured foot, which lands on the railing on the front end of the bed. The bulldog lets out a pained groan at this (animated by Ross).

Granny has put Sylvester in a bed on the opposite side of the room and given him sleeping pills. She leaves with, “There now! It’ll be more quiet on this side of the room and those pills will put you to sleep in a few minutes!” Every time Sylvester’s eyes begin to close, he keeps seeing the bulldog walk up to him ever closer and armed with the stick every time he opens his eyes. After the bulldog is shown preparing to use the stick once he gets to Sylvester’s bed, he whacks Sylvester’s cast with the stick, causing Sylvester to no longer feel sleepy and let out a pained noise. He gives an angry look at the bulldog, who is seen chuckling in his bed (animated by Chiniquy).

In his cage, Tweety wonders, “Where did that putty tat go? He nowhere awound!”, oblivious that Sylvester has successfully come up to him from behind and is about to grab him. Suddenly, Granny is heard approaching, “I’d better peek in and see how little Tweety bird is doing!” Sylvester quickly goes back to bed with the cane. Granny enters and is confused to find Tweety not in his cage and only a few feathers in there. She looks over at a seemingly sleeping Sylvester with feathers sticking out of his mouth. He hiccups and gives Granny a sheepish grin, revealing that he succeeded in consuming Tweety. Granny exclaims in horror and wheels Sylvester into the X-ray room on a cart. She comes out with the X-ray’s results, which shows Tweety’s skeleton inside the stomach of Sylvester’s skeleton. With this, Granny wheels Sylvester out of the X-ray room and into the emergency room (animated by Chiniquy).

In the next scene, Sylvester is seen with a patch on his stomach, revealing they had to operate on him in order to free Tweety. Back in his cage, Tweety again sulks, “Bad ol’ putty tat!” (animated by Chiniquy) The bulldog is shown chuckling at what Sylvester just went through, with Sylvester coming up to his bed with the cane. “Okay, buster! You asked for it!” Before he can hit the bulldog’s cast, however, the bulldog prepares to hit him the stick, only for Sylvester to dodge it. The bulldog chases Sylvester around the room, attempting to hit him with the stick. Sylvester slides his cast into a mouse hole and silently taunts the bulldog. The mouse who lives in the hole hammers Sylvester’s cast, with Sylvester jumping around in pain from this, much to the bulldog’s confusion. The mouse then hammers the bulldog’s cast when it’s in front of the hole, and he too jumps around in pain (animated by Davis). Coming back in to see Sylvester and the bulldog hopping around in pain and clutching their respective casts, Granny believes they did this to each other and is fed up, “You two at it again!? I’ll just have to strap you both in bed!” (animated by Ross)

The bulldog is very annoyed at being strapped down in his bed, to which Granny tells him, “Oh, stop sulking! Why don’t you make a hobby like the pussycat?” (animated by Chiniquy) Sylvester, not letting his being strapped down in bed stop him from doing anything, is shown constructing some sort of mechanical device atop his strap (animated by Davis). Granny once more leaves, “When you two decide to behave, I’ll unstrap you”. After she exits (animated by Ross), Sylvester’s device is revealed to be one that allows him to move stuff over to the bulldog. He first drills a hole into the bulldog’s cast, with the latter sweating in horror at this. Sylvester then puts a dynamite stick into the hole, and hammers a cork into it, so the bulldog can’t remove it. The bulldog retaliates by picking up a nearby crutch and pushing it across the ground to wheel over to Sylvester’s bed, switching out his cast with Sylvester’s, but not putting Sylvester’s on. Unable to do anything about falling victim to his own scheme, Sylvester plugs his ears for the inevitable explosion, as the bulldog gleefully wheels back to his side of the room. After the explosion occurs offscreen, Sylvester finds the cast blown up and his foot apparently worse for the wear, causing him to let out a very pained groan (animated by Davis). At this moment, Granny comes in with some paperwork and is pleased about it, “I’ve got good news, boys! Your X-rays show nothing is wrong with you and you’re dismissed! Isn’t that wonderful?” (animated by Ross)

As the three of them walk out of the hospital, Tweety comments, “Gee, it feels good to be out again!” Spotting Sylvester staring down at him evilly, Tweety lets out an “Uh oh!” and runs off, with the bulldog also going after Sylvester (animated by Ross), running back to the same street at the start of the cartoon (animated by Davis). From her desk, Granny looks out the window after she’s checked out “Tweety”, “Cat”, and “Dog” as outgoing patients (animated by Ross). It turns out they’ve indeed chased each other back into traffic, having not learned anything from this (animated by Davis). Realizing the whole thing is about to start all over again, Granny checks them back in as incoming patients, and ends the cartoon with “Que sera sera” (animated by Ross).
