Directed by Friz Freleng

Animation by Arthur Davis

Release Date:

June 20, 1953

Main Character(s):

Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam, Granny

Summary:

Yosemite Sam sees in the newspaper that Granny has inherited 50 million dollars and decides to marry her for her money. Bugs Bunny sees to it that this does not happen first by disguising as a romantic French-accented lover and then as Granny herself.

That’s Not All, Folks:

The production number is 1266 and was released as a Merrie Melodie.

This cartoon is notable for being one of the very few times Granny appears outside of a Tweety and Sylvester cartoon. Another instance is in “Corn on the Cop” (1965) with Daffy and Porky (she also has a minor but memorable appearance in 1955’s “This Is a Life”).

Additionally, Sam refers to Granny as “Emma” indicating that that might be her actual name.

For some inexplicable reason, the Bugs headshot does not appear in the opening rings (though the “Bugs Bunny in” card still appears).

The title is a pun for “hair trimmed”.

This cartoon is a good showcase of why Virgil Ross’ animation is always so on-model and elegant-looking.

Sam marrying someone for their money would be reused in his solo cartoon, “Honey’s Money” (1962).

The cartoon was used in the 1981 compilation movie, “The Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie”.

One of the newspapers seen at the start of the cartoon presumably parodies the Red Sox as it has a headline on sports: “Pink Socks Win”.

When Sam chases Granny and she remarks that “nothing like this has happened to me since the boys got back from Gettysburg!”, a painting of a barn is shown with it being signed, “Irv Wyner”, referring to the background artist of the same name (being Freleng’s background artist at the time, he of course did the backgrounds for this one). It can also be seen when she is being chased by Bugs disguised as the French gentleman.

Bugs says a variant of his catchphrase at one point.

Speaking of which, this is the last cartoon where “What’s Up Doc” was regularly played as the theme tune of Bugs Bunny cartoons in the opening credits. It would be used a few more times afterwards with those being in “Robot Rabbit” (released six months later, albeit using an intentionally robotic-sounding rendition of it), “No Parking Hare” (1954), “Lumber Jack Rabbit” (1954), and “Wideo Wabbit” (1956) (it also played during McKimson’s director credit on 1956’s “Half Fare Hare”).

Favorite Scene:

Sam amorously chases the Granny-disguised Bugs up the stairs, but Bugs pushes a piano down the stairs towards him. Sam attempts to outrun it, but fails and is subsequently crushed by the piano as he slides down the stairs flattened.

What Happens in This One:

In the town of “Doughnut Center” (with the words “What a Hole” seen on the town’s banner under its name), Sam is seen in front of the News Center looking at the newspaper just as Bugs comes up out of his hole under the sidewalk, which he opens up like a door. He walks up next to Sam to take a look at the newspaper as Sam reads the headline aloud, “Local Widow Inherits 50 Million Dollars”. Sam perks up at this news, “50 Million Dollars!”, before giving a fiendish expression and deciding, “Oooh! Hmm. That widow ought to get married”. Bugs suspiciously watches Sam leave and decides to see what he’s up to (animated by Manuel Perez).

Walking towards Granny’s house while wearing his Sunday best and carrying flowers and candy, Sam gleefully talks to himself about his intentions, “When I get my hands on that money, I’ll buy the old lady’s home and kick the old ladies out! I’ll have the orphans’ home torn down and I’ll get rid of the police department! (evil laughs)” Bugs has been watching him and catches on, “Eh! That evil character’s after that nice old lady’s money! Looks like this boy scout’s gonna do his good deed for today!” (animated by Perez)

Granny is seen knitting by the fire with several wads of the money next to her in a basket labeled “Money to Burn” to use for the fire and to get rid of the extra. She answers a knock on her door and is greeted by Sam attempting to woo her, “I want you, baby! Your eyes! Your lips! Come with me to the Casbah! We’ll make beautiful music together!” Sam brings out a trumpet and literally plays a jazzy rendition of “Sweet Georgia Brown” before amorously chasing a giggling Granny around the house, “Come to Papa, baby!” Granny remarks, “Land sake! Nothing like this has happened to me since the boys got back from Gettysburg!” (animated by Ross)

After Sam chases Granny around a few times, another knock at the door is heard, so Granny leaves to answer it, “Oh, goodness! Someone’s at the door! (chuckles) Don’t go ‘way! I’ll be right back!” (animated by Perez) Granny opens the door and is greeted by Bugs disguised as a French-accented gentleman who charms her with, “Aha! I find thee, my little pigeon! Fly with me to Paree!”, before kissing her hand three times. Bugs also chases her amorously as Granny laughs, “Oh my! Twenty years nothing and then it all piles up in one day!” (animated by Ross)

Sam, sitting on the sofa, watches Bugs chase Granny around several times (animated by Perez) before he gets off and stops Bugs, who asks with a variant of his catchphrase, “Eh, what is up, Monsieur Le Physician?” Sam exclaims, “Ya durn dude! I’ll give you a taste of leather!”, and does so by slapping Bugs with a glove. Acting outraged, Bugs declares, “Ha! You have insult ze great lover!”, and slips a brick into a glove of his own. “The Marquee of Queensbury rules! Take this!” Bugs slaps Sam with the brick-filled glove, causing Sam to spin around as Bugs dumps out the brick remains from the glove. Sam rages, “Oooh!”, so Bugs challenges him to a duel, “Pistols at ten paces?” Sam grabs his and accepts, “You’re on!” (elegantly animated by Ross)

Outside back to back, Bugs asks Sam, “En garde?”, to which Sam answers, “I’m ready!” Bugs just walks in place while giving the ten count but upon getting to 9, he extends it out to trick Sam into walking into the middle of the street, “Nine and a half. Nine and three quarters. Nine and three sixteenths. Eleven sixteenths. Twelve sixteenths! Ten!” By the time Sam turns around and prepares to shoot, he is run over by a bus (animated by Arthur Davis). Looking at his watch and the bus schedule, Bugs remarks in his normal voice, “Yep. He’s right on time”. Dazed from being run over, Sam gets up and comments, “Ooh, what a night” (animated by Ken Champin).

Bugs walks back into the house as Sam comes up to the door with his gun and demands for him to open up, just as Bugs is dressing up as Granny. Once Bugs opens the door, Sam begins to point his gun, “Now I got-!” before realizing who he’s apparently in front of, “Emma (chuckles)” Bugs replies in a feminine voice (which he uses for the rest of the cartoon due to being disguised as Granny for the remainder of the cartoon), “Oh, you’re cute!” and honks Sam on the nose, causing Sam to jump up and yell, “Yahoo!” while clicking his heels. Sam chases Bugs around amorously a few times, before beginning to chase him up the stairs. Bugs then pushes a piano down the stairs towards him, which Sam fails to outrun, as it runs over him and causes him to slide down the stairs flattened (animated by Perez).

The real Granny enters and finds Sam getting up dazed from being crushed by the piano. She gasps, “Heavens to Betsy! He’s looped! Now, here. You better sit down while I fix you a cup of black coffee”. Granny sits Sam down in a chair while she gets his coffee, but in her absence, Bugs, still disguised as Granny, wheels in a tea cart and asks Sam, “One or two lumps?” Thinking “she”’s referring to sugar lumps, Sam answers, “Make it two”, so Bugs mallets him on the head that many times and exits while laughing. Granny now returns, “Here’s your coffee. Uh, one or two lumps?”, only for Sam to angrily kick it away, causing her to gasp in horror. “THAT’S how many!”, he rages. Granny runs up the stairs to get away from him, “Oh! He flipped his lid!” (animated by Champin)

Realizing he accidentally gave his true self away in front of Granny, Sam exclaims, “Great horny toads! Wait, Emmy!” and runs (animated by Champin) up the stairs to the room she’s in to apologize, “Wait! I’m sorry! Open up, Emmy!”, only to find it locked. Granny has the door barricaded with a chair while she is standing behind a turned down sofa and beside a turned-down dresser and armed with a rifle as she says, “D-don’t you come near me!” Sam tells her in a singsong voice, “I can see you through the keyhole!”, only to get shot. Annoyed, he brings in a ladder and climbs up it to peer into the transom, “Aw, come on, Emmy!”, but gets shot again (animated by Davis).

Bugs whistles to get his attention so Sam runs down to him and begins pleading, “Emmy! I’m sorry, Emmy! Give me the lumps! I want the lumps!” When Bugs asks him, “Will you take two?”, Sam ecstatically replies, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah”. After Bugs again mallets him on the head two times, Sam happily exclaims, “I like it! I like it!” Still using the feminine voice, Bugs chuckles, “You’re cute! Let’s elope!” Sam agrees to the idea, “Okay! You get to the window! I’ll get a ladder!” (animated by Davis)

Bugs calls to Sam from the porch, “I want to take a few things along. Catch”, and tosses out numerous items to Sam, who catches a suitcase, and then a trunk, followed by a chair, before getting hit with a sofa. Bugs tosses out a few more things such as a birdcage, the television, a small circular table, and a refrigerator, the latter of which Sam is shown attempting to catch and then a dresser. Sam remarks, “That dame’s takin’ everything but the kitchen sink!” Said kitchen sink then falls into his hands. After Sam reminds, “Don’t forget the money, Emmy!”, a safe is dropped on him. Bugs then takes the dazed Sam out of the safe and runs with him to the church (animated by Davis).

A wedding ceremony begins as Sam walks down the altar with Bugs in drag as the bride. Unbeknownst to Sam, Bugs’ wedding dress is torn off by an unseen nail in the floor, which reveals his rabbit legs and tail. The unseen preacher begins to ask before being confused by the “bride”’s appearance, “Do you Sam take this woman- Woman?- to be your lawful wedded wife?” At this moment, Sam turns to his left and gets a look at Bugs’ legs and tail, realizing that he’s about to marry a rabbit. Sam stammers for a bit before screaming in horror and running out, “No! No, I won’t! I won’t! Not for a BILLION!” and continues screaming, “I won’t!” several times as he is heard running into the distance. Pleased that he succeeded in thwarting Sam, Bugs mock cries in the feminine voice, “Boo hoo hoo! Always a bridesmaid but never a bride! Boo hoo hoo hoo!” (animated by Ross)
