Release Date:

January 28, 1939

Main Character(s):

Porky Pig

Summary:

Porky Pig and his chatty friend, Dizzy Duck, take refuge in an abandoned yacht club when their fishing trip is cut short by rain. While it seems spooky, it’s mostly their antics causing the spooks as well as a lonely dog they rejected earlier accidentally getting stuck in a diving helmet.

That’s Not All, Folks:

Dizzy is similar to the chatty duck characters in “She Was an Acrobat’s Daughter” and “I Wanna Be a Sailor”. Another character similar to him would later appear in “Porky’s Hotel” (also released in 1939).

While the William Tell Overture was used a lot (the finale in particular), this is one of the few Warner cartoons to contain the overture’s prelude.

What I Like About This One:

Dizzy questioning Porky as to why they have to be quiet when fishing as fish can’t hear them above water (animated by Richard Bickenbach).

When it starts to rain, and Porky runs taking Dizzy with him, Dizzy asks, “Porky, why do we have to go? Fishes don’t care if it rains, and I don’t care if it rains. Why should you care if I don’t?”

When Porky and Dizzy first enter the yacht club, Porky asks if anybody’s there. A mysterious voice replies, “No, there ain’t no-b-b-b-b-body here”, imitating his stutter.

Porky accidentally stepping on a shovel with a hat and coat on it. When it stands up, Porky and Dizzy run away in fright (animated by Rod Scribner).

Porky obliviously getting the line of a fishing pole attached to his shirt. When he runs away, Dizzy thinks the pole caught a fish and tries to reel it in (“Oh, boy! Wait till Porky sees what I got!”). When the hook lets go of Porky, it grabs a bearskin rug, which gets onto a chair. When the chair rolls into the room with the bear rug on it, Dizzy thinks a grizzly bear is after him.

When the dog gets curious about a turtle, the turtle bites down on his nose and pulls it back, causing the dog to propel himself into a treasure chest and get a diving helmet stuck on him (animated by Gil Turner).

The dog getting his tail caught in a mousetrap and when he leaps up in pain, gets tangled up in chains, making him look like a monster.

Dizzy getting so scared at the sight of the dog, that his ghost flies out of his skin, and pulls him into a barrel.

Dizzy getting an umbrella stuck to him and the strong wind outside blowing him out of the club and into the air. A lightning bolt gets him down, and he falls through the chimney and hits a wall where a picture of a captain falls on him with Dizzy’s head replacing the captain’s.

The turtle having a candle on his shell and he obliviously sends Porky jumping up in pain and down into the water below.

Dizzy slipping on oil when trying to help Porky, causing Porky to fall into the water again. He pulls on the rope and gets nothing, only to see Porky standing near him, soaking wet.

When the dog is freed from the chains and helmet, Dizzy asks Porky, “Boy, did he scare you?”. The dog then runs back into the club to clobber the turtle in revenge (animated by Turner).
