Release Date:
April 11, 1936
Main Character(s):
None
Summary:
An all-bird cast. A gangster bird brags about how tough he is by beating up a cop (who has the misfortune to pass by the saloon) and also drinking down five slugs of gin. After the gangster and his cronies rob the bank, they are pursued by the cops to their hideout. This becomes a cops and robbers shootout.
That’s Not All, Folks:
The cartoon was given a Blue Ribbon reissue. Since the original titles are lost, here are the credits:
Supervision: I. Freleng
Musical Score: Bernard Brown
Animation: Jack Carr and Riley Thomson
This was the last cartoon to be scored by Bernard Brown. After this, Norman Spencer would be the sole composer until Carl Stalling replaced him later on in the year.
Several crew members are mentioned on the front page of the “Birdville Gazette”. These include storyman Melvin “Tubby” Millar, animator Jack Carr, animator Norm McCabe, and Friz Freleng.
What I Like About This One:
The music that plays at the beginning.
The voice of the protagonist gangster.
One of the gangsters ditching his dance partner to help rob the bank.
The cronies doing all of the robbing, while our lead bird just waits outside whistling and flipping a coin.
The lead gangster shooting through their getaway vehicle’s exhaust pipe.
The reward for the lead gangster’s capture: “500 worms” (he even laughs at this).
The police birds getting their hats shot off.
The lead gangster shooting more rapidly after one of the cops shoots a hole in the coin he was flipping.
The lead gangster eventually getting taken to jail. In his cell, he sings about how he’s “just a jailbird now”.
