Directed by Tex Avery

Release Date:

October 3, 1936

Main Character(s):

Porky Pig

Summary:

An evil landlord named Mr. Viper (who literally slithers like a snake at one point) threatens to evict Porky Pig and his father from the farm they live at if they don’t have the money for the mortgage at 3 pm the day after. Porky and his horse decide to go to the city to get the money needed. Porky gets a job as a milkman, but his horse’s nemesis, Hank Horsefly, causes them to smash a lot of bottles, getting them fired. Porky then enters his horse in a horse race where Hank’s bite causes them to win the $10,000 cash prize.

That’s Not All, Folks:

This is the first cartoon to use the Looney Tunes intro from October 1936 to September 1937.

Part of the cartoon’s score was featured in the CD, “The Carl Stalling Project Volume 1” (part of the score for “Porky’s Poultry Plant” was also on that CD).

The scenes with Mr. Viper were animated by future director Chuck Jones.

What I Like About This One:

Porky’s horse is very slow, but whenever Hank bites him, he goes very fast.

The sinister music that plays when Mr. Viper first appears.

The aforementioned gag of Mr. Viper slithering like a snake.

When Porky’s father comments that “things are getting dark”, the scene darkens. Porky telling him to “brighten up” brings back the brightness.

Porky delivering bottles, unaware that cats are stealing and drinking out of them.

Porky dumping all of the empty bottles into a container labeled “milk”. All of the bottles then come out full of milk.

Porky sending a bottle of milk up to a woman who lives at the top of a penthouse by sending it up the drainpipe and blowing it upward.

After they’re fired thanks to Hank, the horse gets into the race by being attracted by a bucket of oats for one of the racehorses.

Hank’s bite helping Porky and the horse win the race (they zoom around so fast that three racers end up on one horse while another horse switches places with his rider).

Porky coming home in a limo and with the money needed at the last minute.

The ending where Hank bites Mr. Viper in the behind.

Where Can I Watch It?
