Naughty Neighbors
Directed by Bob Clampett
Release Date:
October 7, 1939
Main Character(s):
Porky Pig, Petunia Pig
Summary:
Porky Pig and Petunia Pig are the respective leaders of the feuding Martins and McCoys and they end the feud when they fall in love. But while they go on a romantic walk, the other members of both families continue the feud.
That’s Not All, Folks:
This is the last Golden Age appearance of Petunia Pig. She would later be mentioned in “Porky Pig’s Feat” (1943) and indirectly mentioned in “Dumb Patrol” (1964). Petunia would also get a few starring roles in HBO Max’s “Looney Tunes Cartoons” (2020-2023).
A duck resembling Daffy appears at one point.
The newspaper contains a birth announcement for John Carey, one of the animators in Clampett’s unit around this time.
The newspaper also has some inaccuracies: the date being June 18, 1942 (which hadn’t happened yet and was also the same day Paul McCartney was born) and the Titanic sinking which actually happened thirty years prior.
The restored print uses the incorrect Porky drum ending.
What I Like About This One:
The peaceful music playing over the opening title card: “Our story unfolds in the quiet old hills of Kaintucky (Kentucky) where, in contrast to the troubled outside world, the hill folk live in peace and harmony.” The next scene shows quite the opposite with the feuding families at war.
The male chorus of “When I Yoo Hoo” when the newspaper announcing the end of the feud appears.
A sign labeled “Chewing Tobacco Road”.
As Porky and Petunia tell each other they’re glad the feud is over, Porky starts to say he’s glad they can be sweethearts but his stuttering causes him to say, “We can say hello”.
An elderly Martin duck speaking to an elderly McCoy duck that whoever would’ve thought they’d be friends, before they angrily get in each other’s face, with the Martin duck yelling, “It’ll never work!”
Porky and Petunia’s charming rendition of “Would You Like to Take a Walk?” as they head up into the hills together.
The two ducks playing “Patty-Cake” with embarrassed grins on their faces, as getting along is clearly something they don’t want to do.
A rabbit and a skunk shaking hands with the rabbit wearing a gas mask.
Two younger ducks attempting to a dance together only to reveal they’d rather beat each other up (along with the pretty humming of a female chorus).
The elderly ducks hitting each other with a club or a mallet in the middle of their patty-cake game before the whole thing escalates into the feud starting up again.
A duck resembling Daffy blowing a cow’s horn as a bugle.
A mother duck’s offspring hatching out as soldier ducklings.
A mother cat getting bullets shot through a milk carton in order to feed her kittens.
When Porky and Petunia discover to their horror that the feud has resumed, Porky stops it for good when he throws a grenade decorated with hearts labeled “Feud Pacifier”. When it explodes, it causes everyone in the feud to do childish playtime things like playing maypole, marbles, ball, etc.
As Porky and Petunia share a kiss, and the female chorus does a reprise of “Would You Like to Take a Walk”, a deep-voiced duckling finishes the last part of the song.
