Directed by Bob Clampett
How to cut the hair of uncooperative clients
Release Date:
May 23, 1942
Main Character(s):
Elmer Fudd (voice only)
Summary:
A spot gag newsreel cartoon with Elmer Fudd as the narrator.
That’s Not All, Folks:
If his voice counts, this is technically Elmer’s only appearance in a black and white cartoon.
The scene of the ducks walking is reused animation from “Chicken Jitters”.
The opening credits are shown upside down before they are flipped back right side up.
Clampett’s name appears on a road sign at one point.
Henry Binder is caricatured as a dinner patron, while Leon Schlesinger is caricatured as the owner of a store about to be constructed, and Ken Harris is caricatured as a contractor.
Porky is still featured in the intro, despite not appearing.
What I Like About This One:
Having a well-established cartoon star (Elmer) being the narrator really makes this one stand out among other spot gag cartoons.
A hunter blowing his moose call but the moose blows his “hunter call” (“Yoo-hoo” in a sexy voice), clobbers the hunter, and does a Tarzan yell.
A barber has a new invention to get little boys to sit still while getting a haircut: a Jack in the box with Hitler’s head that scares the kids stiff, making the haircut a much faster and easier process.
While out at a restaurant, a customer (caricature of Henry Binder) uses a portable rear-view mirror to prevent his hat and coat from getting stolen while he’s eating. He happily leaves with both items still intact, but his pants are now missing.
The dark forests are usually lit up with fireflies, but there are no lights to be seen. Elmer asks the fireflies where their lights are, but they tell him they’re having a blackout.
Artist Frank Putty, illustrator of the “Putty Girls” is seen painting what appears to be a portrait of a sexy woman but when Elmer asks Putty to see his painting, it’s revealed to be of Putty’s thumb!
A chick makes the mistake of joining a father duck and his kids for a swim. The chick immediately sinks to the bottom of the lake and the father duck (who sounds like Daffy, but doesn’t look like him) tells him, “You shouldn’t have jumped in that water. You’re a chicken. Chickens can’t swim.” The chick is seen drumming his fingers at the bottom of the lake with an annoyed expression and says “Now he tells me!”
Baseball pitcher Carl Bubble attempts to recreate George Washington’s throwing of a silver dollar across the Potomac River, but Bubble’s throw results in the coin falling into the water a few inches from the shore. An observing Scotty dog (complete with rolling R’s) tells us “Well a dollar just doesn't go as far these days, does it, folks?” Elmer replies, “You’re wight!”
The lead dog is sent out early to hunt for the fox while the others follow later. But the other dogs are seen simply going back and forth. Elmer wonders where the lead dog went to- he’s romancing the pretty female fox (“Now give me a kiss, or I’ll tell ‘em where ya are!”)
In the last gag, all of the USS battleships are seen sailing in stormy weather, except for the USS California, which is sailing in sunshine.
