The Phantom Ship
Directed by Jack King
Release Date:
February 1, 1936
Main Character(s):
Beans, Ham and Ex
Summary:
Ham and Ex join Beans on a mission to find pirate treasure in the frozen North. The ship turns out to be haunted, and when Beans encounters some frozen pirates, he stupidly thaws them out. After being chased around by the revived pirates, they narrowly escape.
That’s Not All, Folks:
This was the first cartoon to use the zooming shield, which would also become forever associated with these cartoons.
This is the last black and white cartoon until 1941’s “The Haunted Mouse” to not feature Porky Pig.
What I Like About This One:
Beans’ plane, which has a personality of its own, allowing Ham and Ex to stow away.
The plane’s thermometer breaking when they reach Iceland.
A bat on the ship which has the words “The Phantom” on its wings.
Beans’ reaction upon seeing that Ham and Ex joined him (as seen in the screenshot I used).
Beans getting punched by an anthropomorphized anchor.
A skeleton popping out of a lifeboat to tell Ham and Ex to “pipe down”.
Ham and Ex mistaking Beans for a ghost and attacking him.
Beans’ idiot move in thawing out the frozen pirates. This is made even funnier by the fact that he removed the chairs they were sitting in and burned those to start a fire. So when the pirates are completely thawed out, they fall on their bottoms.
The pirate captain getting his peg leg stuck in a hole.
