Polar Pals
Directed by Bob Clampett
Release Date:
June 3, 1939
Main Character(s):
Porky Pig
Summary:
Eskimo Porky Pig must protect his arctic animal friends from a villainous fur trapper named I. Killem.
That’s Not All, Folks:
It’s ironic that this cartoon was released in June, yet takes place in the Arctic, one of the coldest places on Earth.
Porky is seen nude at one point (although this isn’t a problem due to him not being a human).
A picture of Petunia Pig is seen hanging on the wall of Porky’s igloo.
Porky’s reflection briefly morphs into Edward G. Robinson in one scene.
What I Like About This One:
Porky’s igloo having a “Keep Off the Grass” sign in front of it.
The temperature being so cold that the alarm clock is seen wearing mittens and it comes to life to blow on them!
Porky’s sleeping under a bunch of fur blankets which are all live polar bears.
The water from Porky’s shower instantly freezing.
The musical segment, “Let’s Rub Noses Like the Eskimoses”, which involves a polar bear going wild after rubbing noses with a female polar bear, two penguins doing the same thing, Porky’s reflection on the ice being shown as distorted, a walrus ice skating, a fish playing a whale’s teeth like a xylophone, and a penguin accidentally deflating a walrus’ nose with his beak.
When I. Killem makes his entrance, his ship splits an iceberg in two.
A penguin’s shadow getting shot down by I. Killem, causing it to do dramatic death poses.
A drunk walrus bragging that I. Killem missed him, but is proven wrong when the alcohol he drinks pours out of several holes in his body.
A cannonball striking down penguins like bowling pins.
Porky’s gun acting like a spittoon that turns an iceberg into a mallet, which strikes I. Killem on the head.
After Porky shoots a hole on I. Killem’s boat, causing it to sink, I. Killem resorts to fleeing in what he thinks is a kayak but is actually an angry whale that shoots him away, out of his blowhole.
Porky jumping happily about I. Killem’s defeat, but falling through the ice. A few fish then hold up an ice-encased Porky.
