Directed by Frank Tashlin

Release Date:

Main Character(s):

Porky Pig

Summary:

Porky Pig wants to become a bandleader at the Crocadero (a spoof on the Trocadero) and gets a job as a dishwasher there. When his walrus boss catches him trying to swat a fly in a rhythm-like way, he sees that he’s more interested in music than in dish-washing and fires him. Upon learning that the musicians for tonight’s entertainment are delayed and that the patrons are demanding music, the walrus realizes he must get “that swing dishwasher” back. So Porky gets to lead the entertainment as bandleader for the night.

That’s Not All, Folks:

Caricatures include Leopold Stokowski, Rudy Vallee, Benny Goodman, Paul Whiteman, Guy Lombardo (as Guy Lumbago and His Boiled Kanadians), Carmen Lombardo (as Cryman Lombago), and Cab Calloway (as Cab Howlaway and His Absorbent Cotton Club Orchestra).

Tashlin once again uses the technique of a character running off in a few quick frames in very few seconds. In this case, it’s when the walrus boss gets Porky back and makes him bandleader.

What I Like About This One:

Porky having a diploma from the “Sucker Correspondence School of Music”.

Porky’s imitations of Stokowski, Vallee, and Goodman.

Porky discovering that dinner at the Crocadero costs $25.00 per plate with food on plate being $25.50 and is disappointed to find that he only as “one scent” (a coin which has a picture of a skunk on it).

A penguin waiter having trouble getting past the walrus boss due to the latter’s body weight. He eventually climbs over him.

The table being raised up for a giraffe customer.

The patrons’ rhythmic chanting of “We want music!”

The delivery man pulling out the letter from the musicians from his beard.

When Porky is caricatured as Paul Whiteman, he has trouble with keeping his bulging belly in place.

The finale with Porky imitating Cab Calloway.

The running gag of the penguin waiter’s drink being slurped up by the trombone player. In the end, the penguin downs the drink himself and razzes the trombone player.
