Main Character(s):

Porky Pig

Summary:

Porky Pig is a soldier in the Navy. When they are informed about the reward for the capture of a gang of pirates, they all set off, but the captain has Porky stay behind with the ship. When the pirates attack the ship, Porky has to defend it by himself.

That’s Not All, Folks:

This cartoon uses the same premise as “Little Beau Porky” where Porky is the soldier who is ridiculed by his superior, has to stay behind at headquarters while everyone else is away, and then has to protect said headquarters from the enemy.

This is the first cartoon to use the late 1938- early 1941 Looney Tunes theme.

This is one of four black and white Porky cartoons to be directed by Hardaway and Dalton. The other three are “It’s an Ill Wind”, “Porky and Teabiscuit”, and “Porky the Giant Killer” (all released in 1939).

What I Like About This One:

The instrumental of “Song of the Marines” at the beginning.

Porky stuttering while singing “Shovin’ Right Off for Home”.

A sailor being replaced by a seal when a wave splashes over him.

A trio sliding off the deck after the chorus of “Shovin’ Right Off for Home” ends.

The captain ordering Porky to “batten down the hatches”. When Porky answers that he did, the captain’s reply is “Well, batten them down again! I’ll teach those hatches!” (animated by Gil Turner).

The captain blowing on a sleeping soldier’s fingers when his whistle won’t work (animated by Turner).

The captain shouting that “Last one in the mess hall’s a softie!” and then ordering everyone to stop so he can get into the mess hall first.

The captain not letting Porky aboard one of the ships when they all go off to capture the pirates: “Get out! You’re rocking the ship!”, shuts the door and then opens it to add, “And I do mean rocking!” (animated by Turner).

In the pirate’s submarine, the pirate captain fires a torpedo like a pinball machine. When the torpedo gets to the ship, a hand pops out and stamps a target on the spot it will explode.

One of the pirates plugging up Porky’s cannon with gum (fired from a slingshot).

Porky swinging on a rope and knocking off several pirates before capturing their submarine with a plunger.

In the end, when Porky is given the reward for capturing the pirates, the captain again says “Last one in the mess hall’s a softie!” and everyone runs in. Porky only dashes out and back again to retrieve his reward money (animated by Richard Bickenbach).
