Porky's Baseball Broadcast
Directed by Friz Freleng
Release Date:
July 6, 1940
Main Character(s):
Porky Pig
Summary:
A series of wacky baseball gags with Porky Pig as the announcer.
That’s Not All, Folks:
Some of the gags and animation are reused from “Boulevardier from the Bronx”.
Freleng would do a baseball-centered cartoon again in one of the very best Looney Tunes, “Baseball Bugs” (1946).
Ben Hardaway is credited as storyman and Cal Dalton is the animator given credit.
The scene about Native American “scalpers” was cut when shown on MeTV, which was unfortunately where the restored print was first seen.
What I Like About This One:
The music playing over the credits and the start of the cartoon.
Porky announcing that tickets are selling like hot cakes where a chef pours them out like cake batter although the batter forms into tickets.
The pitcher for the Giants, Carl Bubble, being a literal giant.
The opposing pitcher, Larry O’Leary from Walla Walla, talking double-headers. He’s revealed to be a two-headed person (animated by Cal Dalton).
Another pitcher having trouble with slumping clothes (animated by Gil Turner).
One player, a dog with a long body, running to the bases by having his rear end catch up to him at another base.
“They’ve got the pitcher in a hole already”: the pitcher literally is in a hole.
“Looks like the pitcher is blowing up!” An offscreen explosion occurs and only the hat and mitt survive the explosion (both items undamaged!).
A player getting “trapped” (his foot being caught in a mousetrap) and making an overly dramatic scene about it.
The running gag about a slow, fat fellow resembling a butler trying to find his seat which he doesn't find until the very last exciting play. But he never witnesses it as the seat turns out to be directly behind a post! (animated by Richard Bickenbach) That night, he is the only one still there and is seen twiddling his thumbs. Suddenly, he snaps in anger and proceeds to tear up the entire stadium! (animated by Dalton)
