Porky's Double Trouble

Directed by Frank Tashlin

Amazing how nobody got suspicious as to why “Porky” has suddenly grown a beard.

Release Date:

November 13, 1937

Main Character(s):

Porky Pig, Petunia Pig

Summary:

A criminal pig named “The Killer” has escaped from prison and upon reading the newspaper, notices that bank teller Porky Pig looks just like him. He kidnaps him and smuggles all of the money and jewels given to him. However, secretary Petunia Pig is able to identify who the real Porky is since Porky has been too shy to accept a date with her, while the Killer kisses her. In the end, it’s shown that Petunia prefers the Killer since she actually enjoys the way he kisses.

That’s Not All, Folks:

There is actually an easier way to tell Porky and the Killer apart: the Killer is clearly unshaven.

This is the last appearance of Tashlin’s version of Petunia Pig. Bob Clampett would later revive her in her familiar appearance (with black hair in pigtails) in “Porky’s Picnic” and “Naughty Neighbors” (both released in 1939).

The Killer disguises as Mae West to conceal his identity.

The Killer’s hideout is called the “Katz School for Girls” (although he and his cronies are all males), which is a reference to Ray Katz, who was Leon Schlesinger’s assistant and brother-in-law.

What I Like About This One:

The Killer’s cronies being fooled by the Killer’s Mae West disguise. One of them scritches “her” chin and asks, “What message did the Killer send, sweetie pie?” “She” answers, “He said-” and punches all of them before yelling in his normal voice, “Not to fool around with dames, ya mugs!”

The Killer bragging about once being Public Enemy Number 9 but now being at the top.

A Scotty dog opening a sock that he uses as a safe but butterflies come out before he can deposit a single coin.

Porky being saved from asking Petunia on a date by the lunch bell.

The Killer, in his Mae West disguise, trying to knock Porky into the motor of his vehicle, but is forced to hide his hammer every time Porky tells “her” something (“It won’t take a minute”, “It’s almost fixed”). He finally kicks him into the motor when he’s finished (“It’s in the bag”. “So are you!”).

Once the Killer dresses up in Porky’s clothes, his reflection sticks his tongue out at him! He socks his reflection, breaking the mirror and giving his reflection a black eye.

The animation of the Killer smuggling all of the items his customers give to him.

When Petunia calls “Porky” over, the Killer yells, “Yeah, what is it?” but then corrects himself with a perfect imitation of Porky.

Petunia realizing the Killer isn’t the Porky she knows when he kisses her and pushing a button to activate the burglar alarm.

When one of the Killer’s cronies notices the cops, he starts shooting rapidly, causing all his weapons to fly out of his clothes.

A cop thinking he’s been shot when a woodpecker pecks away at the same tree he’s sitting on.

Porky breaking free and fighting the criminals.

Petunia identifying who the real Porky is, but saying she prefers the Killer.
