Porky's Duck Hunt

Directed by Tex Avery

“At last! I’m finally here!”- Daffy

Release Date:

April 17, 1937

Main Character(s):

Porky Pig, Daffy Duck

Summary:

Porky Pig goes hunting ducks but one (Daffy Duck) isn’t willing to cooperate.

That’s Not All, Folks:

This is the first appearance of Daffy Duck.

Bob Clampett (who would become a director in three months) animated Daffy’s first legendary scene (in the above screenshot).

This is also the first time that Mel Blanc voices Porky.

A caricature of Joe Penner (a comedian who was one of Mel Blanc’s biggest influences) appears at one point, popping out of the water, asking “You wanna buy a duck?”

This is the first cartoon to use the “Ranz de Vaches” from the William Tell Overture (often used as a sunrise or dawn theme).

What I Like About This One:

Hearing Mel Blanc voice Porky for the first time (he unsurprisingly nails it).

Porky thinking his gun isn’t loaded but is proven wrong when it shoots through the ceiling. His upstairs neighbor then comes down and punches him in the face as Porky accidentally shot a hole in the back of his pants.

Several hunters firing at a duck but they all miss.

A cross-eyed hunter shooting down two airplanes.

Porky accidentally shooting a barrel of moonshine, causing five fish to get drunk. The drunken quintet then go into a chorus of “On Moonlight Bay”.

Porky seemingly shooting Daffy down, and having his dog jump in the water and bring him back. But instead, Daffy throws the dog down and swims off. Porky then pulls out a few papers and realizes that what Daffy just did wasn’t in the script. Daffy assures him, “Don’t let it worry ya, skipper. I’m just a crazy darn-fool duck!” And he does his “hoo-hoo” laugh for the first time (Bob Clampett once referred to this as “Hugh Herbert with a hot foot”).

Daffy swallowing an electric eel and becoming a feathered bolt of electricity.

Another flock of ducks distracting Porky whenever he tries to eat his lunch (a sandwich). Porky shoots his gun the wrong way and ends up in the water.

When Porky attempts a duck call, several hunters fire at him. Porky then throws the duck call down in disgust but it bounces into the dog’s mouth. So the dog quacks whenever he hiccups.

When Porky goes home, he sees another flock of ducks performing acrobatics outside his window. He tries to shoot at them, but there are no more bullets left. The gun then shoots at the upstairs neighbor again who gains a second hole in his pants.

The ending where Daffy “hoo-hoo”s all over the “That’s all Folks!” end card.

Where Can I Watch It?
