Porky's Five and Ten

Directed by Bob Clampett

Release Date:

April 16, 1938

Main Character(s):

Porky Pig

Summary:

Porky Pig’s boat of merchandise for a new 5 and 10 store is robbed by a gang of thieving fish, who fool around with his merchandise and imitate Hollywood stars.

That’s Not All, Folks:

At one point, a tin of sardines labeled “Cannon Brand Sardines” is shown. This is a reference to animator Robert Cannon.

Caricatures include Laurel and Hardy, Greta Garbo, Mae West, Jack Dempsey (as “Jack Sharkey”), and Gene Tunney (as “Gene Tuna”).

Clampett would later state his frustrations of having to use Porky all the time and would only have him briefly appear in a few cartoons he directed as a loophole (other examples include “The Lone Stranger and Porky”, “Porky’s Hotel”, “Slap Happy Pappy”, “Porky’s Poor Fish”, “The Chewin’ Bruin”, and “Porky’s Snooze Reel”).

Porky’s boat is labeled “Petunia”.

What I Like About This One:

A sawfish (who literally has a saw for a nose) sawing out the bottom of Porky’s boat, allowing the fish to get access to Porky’s stuff. He then unscrews his saw and has another fish be a guard, using it as a bayonet.

Fish using seahorses as a merry go round, with “The Merry Go Round Broke Down” playing.

A fish swallowing a teapot and whistling as accompaniment to “The Merry Go Round Broke Down”.

Another fish swallowing a clock and the animation of his body movements when it continues ticking inside his stomach.

A fish with Hugh Herbert’s laugh passing by, with a tag labeled “Foo”.

When another fish swallows a radio, he has to suffer the consequences of his body reacting to a news report about two bombers and then gangsters.

Two electric eels posing as the neon sign for a makeshift “Hollywood Hotel”.

A female fish imitating Greta Garbo when she steps into enormous shoes.

Another fish imitating Mae West upon swallowing a double ended bulb and and having jewelry land on her neck.

A boxing match between Jack Sharkey and Gene Tuna being on a typewriter.

Porky trying to fish the guard fish out but the guard fishes the worm off the hook and then eats it.

The legs of what look like a bunch of dancing girls all turn out to belong to an octopus.

The fish ignoring a radio warning about a waterspout and then the radio yells, “Well, come on you guys, scram!”

The waterspout turning out to be beneficial for Porky as it allows him to get all his merchandise back.

Porky spraying the guard fish with seltzer.
