Porky's Hare Hunt

Directed by Ben Hardaway

Release Date:

April 30, 1938

Main Character(s):

Porky Pig

Summary:

Porky Pig goes hunting rabbits but is repeatedly heckled by a wise-guy rabbit.

That’s Not All, Folks:

This was the first appearance of the rabbit who would eventually lead to the creation of Bugs Bunny (although they are not the same character).

The rabbit laughs like Woody Woodpecker. Incidentally, Hardaway helped to develop that character.

This is the only cartoon that Hardaway directed solo upon his return to the studio. He would shortly be teamed with Cal Dalton.

The rabbit says, “Of course you know, this means war!” at one point which would become a phrase Bugs Bunny would often use.

What I Like About This One:

The rabbit getting Porky’s attention by tapping on his shoulder and twirling his finger around his head (by way of telling him he’s crazy).

The rabbit fooling Porky’s dog, Zero, with a mechanical rabbit.

The rabbit pouring pepper in Porky’s gun causing it to sneeze a tree off its roots.

The rabbit drinking “Whizz Hare Remover” to turn invisible.

“Don’t let me worry ya, chief. I’m just a trifle pixilated”.

Porky saying, “Sure glad to get rid of that dope”, then the rabbit appears behind a tree and says, “That’s what you think!”

The rabbit splitting Porky’s gun in half and then asking for his hunting license. Porky gives it to him, but the rabbit tears it up and chortles, “Well, you haven’t got one now!”

When the rabbit uses his ears like propellers to fly, Porky actually manages to get him down with a rock. The rabbit acts like he’s hurt but then says, “Of course you know, this means war!”

Porky’s attempt to get the rabbit out of a cave with dynamite landing him in the hospital. The rabbit comes to visit him and gets Porky in an awkward position.
