Porky's Picnic

Directed by Bob Clampett

Release Date:

July 15, 1939

Main Character(s):

Porky Pig, Petunia Pig, Pinky

Summary:

Porky Pig goes on a picnic with Petunia Pig, but mischief lover Pinky tags along and Porky must rescue him from dangerous zoo animals.

That’s Not All, Folks:

Petunia returns in this cartoon and Clampett has now redesigned her into her familiar appearance with hair and pigtails.

Pinky, who previously appeared in “Porky’s Naughty Nephew”, also returns here.

This is a good example of why continuity does not matter in cartoons as Porky’s previous appearance was in “Old Glory” where he was a little boy. Here, he is back to being an adult again.

Near the end, after Porky brings Pinky back, he falls and slides across the ground, getting mud all over his face. When Petunia kisses him for saving Pinky, the mud transfers over to her face, making her look like she’s in blackface. Obviously, this gag would not be acceptable today.

A sign advertising “Looney Tunes” is seen at one point.

What I Like About This One:

Porky getting caught in a stutter when trying to say Petunia’s name and telling the audience, “I sound like a motorboat”.

Porky combing his bald head.

Petunia’s doorbell being a mechanical arm that knocks on the door and then on Porky’s head.

Porky mixing up the words “park” and “picnic” when asking Petunia out on said picnic.

Porky and Petunia pulling over when they hear a horn. It’s Pinky, using a honking horn, while catching up with them on his scooter!

When Porky catches Pinky, and puts him next to Petunia, he begins to tell Pinky the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. When Porky’s stutter prevents him from saying Goldilocks, he instead refers to her as “a little peroxide blonde”.

Pinky uncoupling the side-car from Porky’s scooter, sending himself and Petunia on a wild ride. When they come back, Porky has just finished the story and is completely oblivious to the fact they weren’t there. Pinky replies, “Gee, that’s the best story I never heard!”

When they arrive at the park, Pinky keeps bothering Porky while the latter is resting by hitting him with a plank. The second time Pinky attempts this, Porky catches him and asks what he was going to do. Pinky shows he was going to whack him with the plank again. Porky tells us, “Cute kid” before making a cringing face and slashing noise (seen in the screenshot used).

While wandering off to the nearby zoo, Pinky passes through an alligator’s mouth to retrieve his shoe.

Pinky resting with the lion cubs and waving at Porky.

When Porky grabs Pinky, the mama lion suddenly wakes up and chases them around the cage. Porky stops the chase to prevent Petunia from fainting while Pinky and the mother lion patiently wait to resume the chase. After picking Pinky up, Porky says “Ok” and the chase continues.

Earlier, Pinky had tried to cut off the head of a squirrel (but fortunately, failed to do so). This time, when he tries to do it again, the squirrel hits him with the same plank he hit Porky with earlier.
