Porky's Romance
Directed by Frank Tashlin
Release Date:
April 3, 1937
Main Character(s):
Porky Pig, Petunia Pig
Summary:
Porky Pig proposes to Petunia Pig but she and her obnoxious dog reject him. Heartbroken, Porky attempts to commit suicide (not a good way to solve your problem), by hanging from a tree but the branch breaks and knocks him out. He has a nightmare of what married life is really like.
That’s Not All, Folks:
The cartoon’s plot is similar to the black and white Mickey Mouse cartoon, “Mickey’s Nightmare” (1932).
This is the last cartoon where Joe Dougherty voices Porky.
This is the first appearance of Petunia Pig (although Tashlin’s design of her doesn’t have hair with pigtails).
According to Mark Kausler on the commentary for this cartoon on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 3 DVD set, Volney White animated this scene of the dog making sure Porky doesn’t eat any of the candy he brought for Petunia.
The scene where Petunia notices Porky brought her a box of candy when he sadly walks away, she races out of her house, brings him back to her house, and has them sit down on the couch used a ton of frames for drawing and the scene lasts a total of six seconds!
Part of the cartoon’s score can be heard in “The Carl Stalling Project Volume 1”.
What I Like About This One:
Before the title card and credits are seen, Petunia is introduced and is at a microphone saying that she hopes the audience will like the cartoon. But she gets so jittery, that she flubs up her lines. The announcer advises her, “Don’t get excited”. But then Petunia bursts out, “EXCITED!? WHO’S EXCITED!? I’M NOT EXCITED!” (brilliant voice work from Mel Blanc).
The female singers singing “I Wanna Woo” after the opening credits is very nice to listen to.
The dog having a problem with Porky trying to sample some of the candy he brought Petunia. Porky then ignores the dog, takes a piece, and sticks his tongue out at him. But when he’s not looking, the dog takes the piece (although in real life, this would harm him since the candy is chocolate).
When Porky is knocked out after his failed suicide attempt, the screen spins until it fades into a closeup of church bells ringing.
After Porky and Petunia exit the church, the dog is seen holding on to Petunia’s veil with an annoyed look on his face.
After “Time MUNCHES On”, we hear munching noises and then see Petunia lazily sitting on the couch eating candy, with she and the dog both now grossly obese.
Porky having to do all of the chores, and ends up screwing them all up in the process.
All of their dozens of kids being labeled, “Porky Pig Jr.”
When Porky wakes up from his nightmare, he sees Petunia apologizing to him and agreeing to marry him, but remembering his nightmare, he runs away and then comes back and takes the box of candy with him. He then comes back again and gives the dog a much-deserved kick in the rear that sends him flying through the iris-out!
