January 11, 1941

Main Character(s):

Porky Pig

Summary:

Porky Pig presents a newsreel full of various events during the week.

That’s Not All, Folks:

Once again, Porky has very little to do in this cartoon.

Like with “The Timid Toreador”, Clampett’s previous cartoon, Norm McCabe is given a co-director credit for this one.

This is the last black and white Looney Tunes to not be in the public domain.

Porky’s appearance in the 1940-1941 Looney Tunes intro is redesigned for all remaining black and white cartoons in the 1940-1941 release season.

What I Like About This One:

“Passe News” having a rooster that just simply says “Cock a doodle do” in a very flat voice.

An elk parade in Postoffice, Pennsylvania literally comprises of entirely elks (the music that plays during this scene is also fantastic).

A man who dodges taxes advising the audience to do the same but as the camera pulls back, we see that he is in federal prison!

A new battleship being launched immediately sinks!

Porky imitating Lew Lehr (“Puppies is da cwaziest peoples!”) while showing us various dog breeds. A bird dog flies around, chirps like a bird, and rests on the perch of a bird house (“That’s the first time I ever saw a pooch on a perch!”), a “hot dog” is fanning himself and panting like crazy, and a Doberman Pinscher pinches the other dogs.

Wett, Washington is shown to be a flooded town. Only the town’s tallest inhabitant, Long John Silver, is shown above water, while his short wife is very peeved at being submerged in the water.

Porky marching across a title card for “National Defense” while playing “The Girl I Left Behind Me” on a fife.

A tank proves to be indestructible but gets caught in a “Tank Trap”- a giant mousetrap.

A sea mine is lowered underwater where the slightest touch could set it off. When a jellyfish swims near it and looks interested, the narrator warns him to get away but the jellyfish gives him an annoyed look (as if to say, “Mind your own business!”), and swallows the explosive (the narrator yells, “Hey!” as he does this, and then says, “Well, he asked for it.”). The explosion turns the jellyfish into six delicious flavors of jelly- strawberry, raspberry, cherry, orange, lemon, and lime!

Two horses and their jockeys posing for a picture for a photo finish.

In Goon Lagoon, Florida, human swimmers compete in a swim race but alligators come out the other end instead of them!
