Porky's Spring Planting
Directed by Frank Tashlin
Release Date:
July 16, 1938
Main Character(s):
Porky Pig
Summary:
Porky Pig and his dog, Streamline, plant a garden that gets raided by a flock of hungry chickens.
That’s Not All, Folks:
The cartoon is similar to “Porky’s Garden” in that Porky has to defend his garden from chickens.
This is the only cartoon where Rod Scribner animates a scene for Tashlin. He animated the scene where Porky reacts when he first sees the chickens in his garden.
What I Like About This One:
A tree stump moving out of the way of Porky’s plough.
Porky pushing a button on his hat that acts as a windshield wiper for his sweat (of course, in real life, pigs don’t have sweat glands).
Streamline having a safe for his bones (having categories for T bones, beef bones, marrow bones, and chicken bones).
Anything Streamline says in his head.
Porky rolling up a patch of grass like a carpet, sprinkling flower seed underneath it, and using a plunger to make flowers grow.
Streamline planting seeds by digging holes with his tail and having the seeds slide down his body into the holes.
Streamline cooling his behind in a washtub when he finishes planting. When Porky tells him they’re all done now, he takes the tub with him as it has wheels attached to it.
When a chicken puts the menu for Porky’s garden on the fence, it is hung up with a Schlesinger branded nail (an obvious reference to Leon Schlesinger).
Another chicken struggling to remove an ear of corn and finally doing so with a corkscrew.
Porky starts shooing the chickens away when a group of them are in the middle of eating celery. They go in reverse, causing the celery to grow back.
When Porky tries to swat at a tsking chicken, another tsking chicken keeps appearing. They all hit Porky with their own brooms, and continue tsking.
A chicken commenting on Porky’s makeshift scarecrow (“Nice material”).
In the end, Porky tries to make a deal with the chickens by offering to plant a separate garden just for them and questions them on what vegetable they want. When he questions corn, they reply “Oh, yeaaaahhhhh”.
