October 12, 1940
Main Character(s):
Porky Pig
Summary:
In prehistoric times, caveman Porky Pig goes to get a new suit and gets stalked by a hungry black panther.
That’s Not All, Folks:
The cartoon predates The Flintstones by 20 years as it contains a few elements that wouldn’t exist in prehistoric times- Porky receiving mail and bills.
Porky reads a prehistoric version of the men magazine, Esquire. Here it’s called “Expire”.
The magazine cover features spoonerisms on the members in Clampett’s unit at the time: “Cohn Jarey” (animator John Carey), “Reve Visto” (animator Vive Risto), “Tick Dhomas” (background artist Richard H. Thomas), “Have Doffman” (animator Dave Hoffman), “Cob Blampett” (Clampett), “Farren Woster” (storyman Warren Foster), and “Mubby Tillar” (storyman Melvin Millar, whose nickname was “Tubby”). Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies are also mentioned at the bottom.
What I Like About This One:
A dinosaur menacingly crawling up to the camera before greeting the audience in the manner of Kate Smith: “Hello, everybody”.
A vulture (imitating Jerry Colonna) and lizards becoming a quartet singing “These Are Wonderful Days” with lyrics such as “ The men with big muscles are always the best, the ladies wear fig leaves and think they are dressed. And all the boy babies have hair on their chest”.
Porky’s pet dinosaur, Rover (who lives in a doghouse and behaves like a dog with most of his body sticking out of the other end), getting so excited over a bone Porky offers him that his large wagging tail causes mountains and trees to shake, a bird-like dinosaur and her offspring (including one that is unhatched with his wings and legs sticking out) to fly off, a triceratops to get stripped of his armor down to his polka-dotted underwear, and a Ned Sparks vulture to complain, “Egad! Every day the same thing!”
Porky tearing up his bills when he opens his mailbox.
As Porky goes out to hunt an animal for his new suit, a large snarling dinosaur walks up to him, but Porky kicks him in the shins, causing him to yelp in pain.
Porky shooing away a group of dinosaurs and lizards blocking his path.
Porky attempting to club a leopard cub for his suit, only for the cub to club him instead.
When the panther leaps in front of Porky, Porky dusts him off ready for clubbing, only for his club to vibrate upon hitting the panther.
The panther chewing Porky’s club and spitting it out as a bunch of clothespins.
The panther lifting up his fur like a skirt and daintily tiptoeing through a mud puddle before resuming his speed.
Just as the panther has Porky cornered, Porky explains that he meant no harm and was attempting to get a new suit. The panther suddenly stops growling and says that he can get it for him wholesale.
