Tweety and Sylvester, Granny

That’s Not All, Folks:
The production number is 1346 and was released as a Looney Tune.
This is the first Tweety and Sylvester cartoon to have Granny voiced by June Foray.
Granny’s design in this cartoon is also exclusive to this one.
The title is an obvious pun for the fairy tale it spoofs.
Freleng would use another very forgetful wolf (with Mel Blanc using the same voice as the wolf in this cartoon) in 1958’s “Hare-Less Wolf”.
Granny uses one of Ralph Kramden’s often used phrases from “The Honeymooners”: “One of these days, one of these days… POW! Right in the kisser!”
This is the absolute final time that Freleng was credited as “I. Freleng” (his real name was “Isadore”). Starting with the next cartoon (“Roman Legion Hare”), he would be credited as “Friz Freleng” from then on (when he was producer from the very beginning in 1930 up until his retirement in 1944, Leon Schlesinger did not approve of the directors being credited by their nicknames. This carried all the way long after he retired and even after Schlesinger’s death on Christmas 1949. Why it took six years after Schlesinger’s death for Freleng and Jones to be credited by their familiar nicknames is unknown).
This is also the last Freleng cartoon to have animation by Ted Bonnicksen.
The cartoon was used in the 1982 compilation movie, “Bugs Bunny’s 3rd Movie: 1001 Rabbit Tales”.
The music that plays over the opening credits would be reused in the opening credits of McKimson’s “Mixed Master” (1956), albeit arranged slightly different.
Favorite Scene:
Sylvester accidentally fires a boulder at the wolf, who has succeeded in opening the back door with a log used as a battering ram.
What Happens in This One:
Through still pictures, a female narrator tells us, “Once upon a time, there was a little red hood and cape. And because it was always worn by a certain little girl, she was called Red Riding Hood. This little girl lived in a modest little house in the city. One morning, Red Riding Hood had planned to visit her grandmother, and bring her a gift”. Said gift is Tweety in his cage. Red is then seen skipping along the sidewalk holding Tweety’s cage, “She started off to catch the bus to Grandma’s house, which was in the country”. She passes by Sylvester, who’s rummaging for leftovers in the trash cans. His tail stops moving upon realizing a better meal has passed by as Sylvester looks up and spots Tweety in Red’s hands. Removing the fish bone he had in his mouth in disgust, Sylvester licks his lips hungrily and starts after Tweety and Red (animated by Gerry Chiniquy).
Red gets on the bus, “ACME Transit Co.”, whose route is “To Grandma’s House Via The Woods”. The door shuts after she boards, causing Sylvester to run smack into said door. He then runs to catch up with the bus, eventually running alongside the door and peering in. Tweety looks at him and realizes, “I tawt I taw a putty tat!” Sylvester continues running alongside the bus, but due to not paying attention, runs smack into a wooden road sign, with the impact breaking it. Sylvester comes to in time for Red to leave the bus and go through the woods, with him following on all four’s (animated by Chiniquy).
Sneaking along a few trees, the wolf peers out from behind one as a sign pointing to him labeled “The Big Bad Wolf” appears. Clearly not liking the obvious being pointed out, the wolf smacks the sign away, “Oh, all-alright, alright! They-they-they know who I am!”, before spotting, “Aha! Here-here comes eh, eh, what’s her name? Eh, eh, what’s her name?” A sign comes in out of nowhere from the air, which reads, “You Mean Red Riding Hood?” With this info, the wolf finishes, “Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah! Here-here comes Red Riding Hood! Yeah!” The wolf appears in front of Red and begins to ask, “Ah-ha, ha ha! Uh, where you going, Ms. eh, eh, Ms. eh, eh…” Tweety helps him out, “Wittle Wed Widing Hood!” The wolf asks in full, “Yeah, yeah, yeah! Uh, where you going with the cage, Red Riding Hood?” Red answers, “It’s a present for my grandma” (animated by Chiniquy).
Sylvester has caught up to them and sees what’s going on, so he hides behind a nearby tree, just as Red leaves and says, “Well, goodbye, Mr. Wolf. I’d better get going”. The wolf waves goodbye to her, “Well, uh, goodbye, Ms. eh, eh, Hmm. What’s that kid’s name again?” From behind the tree, Sylvester whispers to him, “Red Riding Hood”. Unaware of who helped him this time, the wolf continues, “Uh, yeah! Yeah, yeah! Goodbye, Red Riding Hood!” He then realizes, “Yeah, going to Grandma’s house, huh? (chuckles evilly) That gives me an idea!” Sylvester also realizes this, “Going to Grandma’s house, eh? Hmm. That gives ME an idear!” The wolf takes the shortcut to Granny’s with Sylvester following. The wolf runs along the path while chuckling fiendishly and then gives Sylvester an annoyed stare when he begins running alongside him. This causes Sylvester to give him a sheepish grin and run back in the opposite direction. At one point, the wolf forgets what he was doing, “Eh, eh, where was I going? Oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, Grandma’s house, that’s it!”, before he continues on his way (animated by Chiniquy).
Once at Granny’s house, the wolf forces her out the front door, “Come on, out you go! Out, Granny!” and then says “Out!” several times. He throws out her suitcase and adds, “And stay out!” before shutting the door. Granny is beyond angry at being evicted and vows, “Ooh, that wolf! One of these days, one of these days…POW! Right in the kisser!” She then puts on a hat and leaves in a disgruntled manner (animated by Arthur Davis).
In the bedroom, the wolf dresses into Granny’s yellow nightgown but upon lifting up the bed covers, finds Sylvester already there and wearing an olive green nightgown. Picking him up by this nightgown, the wolf begins telling Sylvester off, “Now, now, listen, pussycat! Y-You’re-you’re muscling in on my racket!” Upon hearing a knock on the door, Sylvester and the wolf both begin running around in worry before the wolf tells Sylvester, “Quick, quick! Under the bed!” Sylvester goes down under there while the wolf gets under the covers. He begins to say in the feminine voice, “Come in, Little, uh, R-”. The wolf peeks his head down under the bed and whispers to Sylvester in his normal voice, “Quick, what’s that kid’s name again?” Sylvester replies somewhat annoyed, “Red Riding Hood!” (animated by Davis)
The wolf now answers in the feminine voice, “Come in, uh, Little uh, R-Red Riding Hood!” Red enters with Tweety’s cage and greets the disguised wolf, “Good morning, Granny! I brought ya a present”. The wolf instructs, “Just set it down, darling”, which Red does. Sylvester peeks out from under the bed to find Tweety who asks him, “Hewwo, Wittle Wed Widing Hood’s gwandma. What you doing under the bed?” Red then observes, “My, Granny! What big eyes, nose, and sharp teeth you have!” The wolf answers while switching to his normal voice in mid-sentence, “The better to see, smell, AND EAT YOU WITH!” Red gasps in horror and runs out, “Oh! The Big Bad Wolf!” Tweety also gets wise as he screams, “EEE! THE BIG BAD PUTTY TAT!”, before running out of his cage (animated by Ted Bonnicksen).
Tweety runs out of the bedroom and down the hall before he runs the opposite way due to Red coming into view from that way. The wolf, following Red, accidentally gets the door slammed in his face by Sylvester opening it. Finding the wolf dazed behind the door, Sylvester gets a pail of water and splashes the wolf with it. Irritated, the wolf begins attacking Sylvester with the bucket before they both notice Tweety and Red running out the front door. The wolf and Sylvester follow them, only for Red and Tweety to come back into the house and lock said door. Sylvester and the wolf realize this as they run back up to the front door and begin repeatedly pounding on it in unison. The wolf then goes around to the opposite side of the house and attempts to force the back door open by running at it, to no avail. Sylvester decides to break open the front door by using a large elastic band as a slingshot that he nails to the doorway in order to fire a boulder at it. Meanwhile, the wolf succeeds in breaking down the back door with a log he uses as a battering ram. The wolf ends up opening the front door, only to give a shocked open-mouthed expression as he sees Sylvester about to launch the boulder. The launched boulder sends the wolf flying out the back door and into a tree back-first, with Sylvester soon realizing his mistake (animated by Bonnicksen).
Red then flees out the front door with Tweety in his cage and waves down a “City Transit Bus”. The wolf and Sylvester follow and also manage to wave it down at the bus stop (animated by Bonnicksen). Once they get on, they are both punched off one by one by the driver. The driver is revealed to be none other than Granny, who states, “I told ‘em! One of these days….” Red and Tweety finish in unison, “POW! Right in the kisser!” (animated by Chiniquy)
