Rhythm in the Bow

Directed by Ben Hardaway

Release Date:

October 20, 1934

Main Character(s):

None

Summary:

A hobo is thrown off a train after playing the title tune. He wanders into a nearby community where he entertains them with the same song. The hobo is then chased away by a dog who gets caught in the tracks but is saved by the hobo.

That’s Not All, Folks:

This was the last black and white Merrie Melodie. After this, all of the Merrie Melodies will be in color, while the Looney Tunes remain in black and white for many more years.

Unfortunately, the “That’s all folks!” ending for this cartoon has yet to surface to the public, due to the cartoon not being available on home media, not having a restoration as of this writing, and not being seen on television since the 1990s. The ending does exist, however, and once it gets found, I will make a special post announcing it.

What I Like About This One:

One hobo using friction from one of the train’s wheels to cook his lunch.

The title tune is really catchy (both the chorus version and the reprise where it’s sung slightly faster).

The ways a few hobos are revealed to be stowing away during the chorus version of the title song.

The hobo helping out a pair of ducks when he gets thrown off.

The hobo trying to keep the dog away with his violin.

The hobo removing his shoes the same way a sardine can would be opened.
