Snowman's Land
Directed by Chuck Jones
Release Date:
July 29, 1939
Main Character(s):
None
Summary:
A moronic Mountie is assigned to apprehend a criminal named Dirty Pierre, who proves to be a nasty trickster.
That’s Not All, Folks:
The Mountie is voiced by Pinto Colvig, the original voice of Goofy (he even uses Goofy’s voice as well).
This is Jones’ second attempt to make a funny cartoon, the first being “Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur”.
What I Like About This One:
The entire score of the cartoon is absolutely amazing (this is one of Carl Stalling’s best scores of the 1930’s in my opinion).
The chorus of “Song of the Mounted Police” over the opening credits.
The sign on the Mountie cabin: “We always get our man (well- nearly always)”.
The head Mountie mistakenly pulling down his own picture when describing Dirty Pierre, before realizing his mistake and then pulling down Dirty Pierre’s picture.
The other Mounties running away when the head Mountie asks for a volunteer, leaving only the dopey Mountie behind.
The dopey Mountie twisting his arm around his body during his attempt to salute the head Mountie.
The Mountie having trouble with a Dutch door.
The Mountie’s dog sled acting like a car failing to start. He gets them going by pulling on the “Choke” which chokes one of the dogs to get him to run, before the rest do the same.
The Mountie singing “Song of the Mounted Police” while on his way to find Dirty Pierre.
Dirty Pierre is first seen cleaning his nails with a knife and is standing next to one of his own wanted posters. When the Mountie asks him if he’s seen an outlaw named Dirty Pierre, Dirty Pierre says he hasn’t. The Mountie asks if he’s sure, to which Dirty Pierre replies, “Look, do you think I’d lie to you?” The Mountie chuckles, “Of course, you wouldn’t lie, but are you absolutely sure?” Dirty Pierre then shouts, “YES!” into the Mountie’s ear, and then punches him into the ground.
The way Dirty Pierre walks into his cabin.
The way the Mountie shakes snow off of his body when coming up out of the ground.
The Mountie walking up to Dirty Pierre’s cabin and threatening to break the door down before adding, “And I will too!” He ends up breaking everything but the door.
When the Mountie struggles to open the door, he asks Dirty Pierre to give him a hand. Dirty Pierre opens the door, and then gives the Mountie a kick in the pants after the latter says there’s no one in there.
After landing on the floor, the Mountie gets up and attempts to charge at the door but Dirty Pierre opens it at the last second, causing the Mountie to trip and roll into a snowball that gets bigger and bigger.
The way Dirty Pierre laughs at the sight of the Mountie rolling into the snowball (both the animation and the way Mel Blanc has him laugh are hilarious).
The snowball rolling right back and catching the still-laughing Dirty Pierre.
Eventually, the snowball crashes into the Mountie cabin and destroys it.
When the Mountie announces to the head Mountie that he caught Dirty Pierre, he pulls up a snow-covered Dirty Pierre. When they both get a glimpse of him, they both dive into the snow, while the snow vibrates off of Dirty Pierre.
