The Sour Puss
Directed by Bob Clampett

Release Date:
November 2, 1940
Main Character(s):
Porky Pig
Summary:
Porky Pig and his cat go fishing and encounter a wacky flying fish.
That’s Not All, Folks:
The flying fish behaves in the same way as Daffy Duck’s nutty persona as well as Woody Woodpecker.
This is the first time where a character commits suicide after seeing something completely bizarre (“Well, NOW I’ve seen everything!”) In this case, the canary says this in a Jack Benny voice and shoots himself after seeing the cat kiss a mouse in excitement when the cat hears about the fish dinner he and Porky are planning to have.
The cartoon has a special rendition of the late 1938- early 1941 Looney Tunes closing theme.
What I Like About This One:
A headline in the newspaper Porky is reading: “ACME Suspenders Break; Consolidated Pants Drop!”
After Porky dresses in his fishing gear after reading about fishing season opening, he asks the cat to guess what they’re having for dinner the following night. The cat guesses chicken and imitates one. Porky tells him it’s fish and imitates a fish (as seen in the screenshot used).
Instead of counting sheep to go to sleep, the cat counts fish but can’t stop thinking about fish to the point where he’s reached 1 million and takes sleeping pills- a mallet which he knocks himself out with (of course, choosing when you’re tired instead of your body deciding when it’s tired would make life so much easier).
Comes the dawn and the cat is seen fishing with his tail.
When it looks like the cat has swiped down the flying fish and Porky comments that they will indeed have fish for supper, the flying fish reveals he was faking being caught: “That’s what you think, chum!”, he says as he honks the cat’s nose.
The cat sticking his nose in the water where the flying fish uses it as a punching bag and then plucks his tail like a guitar string.
The flying fish asking “Where did the pussycat go?” after he causes the cat to fall into the water.
Porky appearing to catch the flying fish but the flying fish only imitates a yo-yo.
The flying fish imitates a shark to which the cat tries to call his bluff by pulling his fin out. But it’s a real shark so Porky and the cat run away into the distance. The shark then does a Lew Lehr impression: “Pussycats is da cwaziest peoples!”
