Thumb Fun
Directed by Robert McKimson

Animation by Rod Scribner
Release Date:
March 1, 1952
Main Character(s):
Daffy Duck, Porky Pig
Summary:
Daffy Duck decides to hitchhike as an alternate way of flying south for the winter. After being ignored by two vehicles, he gets motorist Porky Pig, headed to Miami, to give him a lift. Daffy’s antics proceed to get Porky in trouble with an enormous driver as well as an Irish-accented cop.
That’s Not All, Folks:
The production number is 1198 and was released as a Looney Tune.
The cartoon was given a Blue Ribbon reissue.
The title is a play on words for how Daffy would say “some fun”. Coincidentally, in Jones’ “Rabbit Seasoning” (released six months later), Daffy says, “Awfully sporting of me, I know, but what the hey, I gotta have SOME fun!”
During the scene where Daffy forces Porky to go very fast, leading to the cop chasing after them, the shot of the road bending as well as the warning sign about an approaching hairpin are reused animation from “Fast and Furry-Ous”.
With most of the cartoon taking place with Porky and Daffy on the road, McKimson would do an entire spot gag cartoon revolving around automobiles a year later in “There Auto Be a Law”.
The animator draft for the cartoon can be viewed here.
The billboard that the cop appears out from behind advertises, “Chef Thomas Restaurant”, which is a reference to Richard H. Thomas.
This is the other Warner cartoon besides “Big Top Bunny” to have animation by Bob Wickersham.
This is the third time where Daffy tries to find an alternative to flying south. The first two were in “Daffy’s Southern Exposure” and “Birth of a Notion”.
The cartoon ends with Daffy stranded in the winter, still failing to hitch a ride. VERY interestingly, Daffy’s next appearance (as well as Porky’s next), Freleng’s “Cracked Quack” (released five months later and will also be our first post in 2026), begins with Daffy flying through a blizzard, regretting having flown south too late (considering how continuity isn’t something important in cartoons, this was very likely unintentional, but it is interesting nonetheless).
I love the rendition of “Ain’t We Got Fun” over the opening credits.
Favorite Scene:
The running gag with the back compartment being so overstuffed that all of the suitcases go flying towards whoever opens it and hurls him backward, with the scene where Daffy tricks the cop into opening the back being the funniest.
What Happens in This One:
Daffy watches a flock of ducks flying while he’s standing in front of a billboard, “Fly South for the Winter. Hot Airlines”, with a duck in flight and an airplane pictured. He laughs, “Suckers! Goin’ south the hard way, huh? Well, ya don’t catch this little black duck flappin’ his way to Miami! Nah! I’m thumbin’ it this season!” (animated by Charles McKimson) The first car he attempts to hitchhike whizzes past him so fast that it blows his feathers off. Embarrassed, Daffy shrinks down to where his body is compressed down to his feet, and after putting his feathers back on, goes back to normal height and sarcastically exclaims, “Well, thanks just loads!” (animated by Bob Wickersham)
Daffy attempts to thumb a second car, whose driver stops to talk to him. “Say, I say, say, boy, y-you know something, boy? I NEVER pick up hitchhikers! Nope, I never do! Never do! Goodbye!”, and drives away (animated by Wickersham). Disgusted, Daffy decides he has to do something drastic so he resorts to painting a fake hole in the road, “a reasonable facsimile of the Grand Canyon”, and putting a sign next to it labeled “Danger! Excavation”. Unaware of the ruse, Porky in his car, stops in front of the painted hole (animated by Phil DeLara). Daffy tells him, “Mighty nice of you to give me a lift south sir!” and notices his “Miami or Bust” sticker on his windshield, “Uh, going to Miami, I see? Well, what could be southier?” Porky attempts to explain, “Well, uh, b-b-b-but I-”, but Daffy interrupts him, “Uh, oh, just a second while I get my bags”. After Daffy leaves to get his bags, Porky explains, “B-b-but there really isn’t any room in the back! I-” (animated by Rod Scribner).
Seconds later, Daffy comes back with a large pile of suitcases, “I always travel light. No use taking a lot of stuff you’ll never use (chuckles), I always say”. As Porky watches him, Daffy opens the back compartment and tosses his suitcases in while singing in tune to “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush”, “This is the way we pack our bags, pack our bags, pack our bags! This is the way we pack our bags to take them to Miami!” Daffy manages to get the door to the back shut, which amazes Porky. “G-g-gosh, did you get them ALL in that eh, l-l-little compartment?” Daffy confirms, “Certainly! Take a look for yourself, buster!” Before Porky can open the back compartment, the large amount of baggage in there causes it to open itself and for all of the suitcases to go flying out at him and leave him piled up in front of a tree. The suitcase on Porky’s face opens to reveal his face stuck in the back flap of some red pants. Daffy sulks, “Now, that was a bright thing to do! Now we gotta stow ‘em all over again!” (animated by Scribner)
With both out on the open road, Daffy tells Porky, “Lucky thing for you, I was able to come along! You seem kind of helpless by yourself!” He then takes notice of the repeated honks of the car behind them and sneers to the driver of this car, “Ah, pipe down!” This turns out to be a rather small car, seemingly driven by a midget. Daffy refers to him as “one of those jokers that drives with his horn!” Porky assumes the driver wants to pass them and decides to be friendly and pull over for him. Daffy refuses, “Oh, no ya won’t! And let that little pip-squeak pass us!? What are you!? Chicken!?” and turns the wheel back. A fight over the wheel ensues, with both Porky’s car and the midget car moving in a zigzag-like way as they continue to drive along. Daffy decides, “I’ll fix the little squirt!”, and pushes his foot on the brake, causing the midget car to bump into the back of them (animated by Charles up to here). Porky becomes mad at Daffy, “N-n-n-now, ya crazy duck! Y-y-you’ve REALLY got us in t-t-trouble!” Daffy retorts, “Trouble, schmouble! I’ll take care of this little joker!” and exits the car to confront him. Daffy opens the midget car’s door and demands, “Alright, Junior! Come on out of there!” Instead of a short guy, a VERY enormous man with a small head and menacing-looking frown steps out. Daffy becomes so terrified that he starts acting like a dog loving on him. The man believes that Porky is the one responsible for all of this so he goes up to him, raises his fist very high, and has it slowly descend on Porky’s head, with the force of the punch being so hard that it pushes Porky’s head far down between his shoulders, and his head pops out from the hood of his car (animated by Wickersham).
Porky continues along the road as Daffy now demands, “Look, mac. Can’t ya squeeze a little more juice out of this jalopy?” Porky adamantly replies, “I’m eh, n-n-n-no hot rod d-d-d-driver. I always obey the s-s-s-speed limit”. Daffy doesn’t care, “Aw, there’s no cops around here. Come on, step on it”. When Porky refuses, Daffy pushes his foot all the way down atop Porky’s on the gas, causing them to go very fast, with the Irish cop chasing after them on his motorbike. The cop’s siren starts sounding when they go fast around a hairpin turn that a sign had warned for them to go slow on (animated by Herman Cohen), as Porky again gets annoyed at Daffy, “Now, eh, s-s-s-stop, ya crazy duck! Can’t you hear th-th-that police siren!?” Daffy dismisses it, “Ah, fiddlesticks! The long arm of the law will never reach us!” The literal long arm of the cop does catch them, however, causing them to come to a stop (animated by Charles).
The cop comes over to the driver’s seat and asks, “Kinda steppin’ on it, weren’t ya?” Porky attempts to explain, but Daffy interrupts, “Relax. I’ll handle this” (animated by DeLara), before telling the cop, “Oh, uh, Officer, this man’s been acting very suspiciously (animated by Wickersham). If I were you, I’d have a look in the back of the car!” As the cop starts to consider it, Daffy whispers to Porky to remind him about what happened earlier with the back compartment being so overstuffed, “In the back! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNG!” Horrified, Porky begs the cop, “Oh eh, n-n-no, no! Eh, eh, please don’t look in the back compartment, M-M-M-Mister Officer-!” But this only makes the cop even more suspicious, “Is that so, now? Well, that’s JUST what I’m going to do, mister!” Oblivious to Daffy giggling at what’s about to happen, the cop opens the back and gets flung backward by the suitcases, to which Daffy exclaims, “WOA-HA-HA-HO-NELLIE!” Daffy gets back in next to Porky, assuring him, “Well, let’s go! I told ya I’d keep you out of trouble, didn’t I, buster?”, but he speaks too soon as the cop grabs them both (animated by DeLara).
In the next scene, Daffy is waiting for Porky outside of the “Muddville Police Station”, as Porky suddenly comes out content. Daffy asks, “Well? How’d ya make out, chum?” Porky responds, “He, eh, l-l-let me off easy! He only fined me, eh, t-t-two dollars!” Daffy is outraged, “Two dollars!? Why, that’s an outrage! You wait right here! I’ll fix it! I’ll slap him with a habeas corpuscle!” After Porky listens in on some indistinct arguing from Daffy and the cops, Daffy peeks his head out of the door and informs Porky, “Oh, uh, heh, heh. It looks like you’ll have to cough up another 50 bucks. They, uh, slapped us with a reckless driving charge.” Porky gives him the 50 dollars, “I, eh, t-t-t-tried to tell ya!”, and after Daffy goes back in, Porky rants, “Oh, d-d-d-drat that crazy duck anyhow!” Suddenly, Daffy is kicked out (animated by DeLara).
Getting up, Daffy tells Porky, “I certainly appreciate what I’ve done for ya!” Porky slow burns at this but then gets an idea as he evilly smiles that he does appreciate it (animated by Charles), and tells him to wait while walking away, snickering fiendishly. Confused as to what Porky’s doing, “Now what’s he doing in that gift-e shoppe?”, Daffy soon sees Porky come back out with a wrapped gift. “Well, what have we got here?”, Daffy asks in excitement (animated by Scribner). Porky confirms, “Oh, it’s, eh, j-j-just a little present for you i-i-in appreciation for all you’ve done for me” (animated by Charles). Daffy becomes ecstatic about this, “A present for me!? Oh, boy! Gimme my present! Gimme my present! Let me see what the present is! Come on! Gimme my present!” Porky refuses, “Oh, eh, n-n-no. I-It’s a surprise for you. I’ll j-j-just put it in here”, and quickly shoves it into the back compartment. “And d-d-don’t you DARE peek!” Daffy says in frustration to himself, “Oooh, I HATE not knowing what it is! I think I’ll take a little peek”. The suitcases all fly out at him and hurl him backward when he attempts to open the back, with Porky snickering evilly at the outcome before he drives away to Miami without Daffy (animated by Scribner).
Daffy angrily removes a suitcase off his beak and throws it on the ground, “Ooh, the dirty double-crosser!” His mood changes upon seeing his gift and opens it, only for his excitement to turn into a shocked extended eyeball take when he sees what it is. It’s an ACME Hitchhiker Thumb! (animated by Scribner) Later, that winter, on a snowy night, Daffy, now wearing his “present”, is still seen failing to hitch a ride while his teeth chatter. “Oh, my achin’ thumb!”, he complains (animated by Cohen).
