Porky Pig

Summary:

Hot tamale vendor Porky Pig accidentally enters the bullfighting ring at the same time a big bullfight is going on, causing him to be chased by the bull, “Slapsy Maxie Rosenbull”.

That’s Not All, Folks:

This is Porky’s second time in the bullring with the first being “Picador Porky”.

This and Clampett’s next cartoon give a co-director credit to Norm McCabe, who would later take over Clampett’s old unit and direct about a dozen cartoons after Clampett took over Avery’s unit when the latter left for MGM.

The cartoon is in the public domain.

The cartoon reuses animation from “The Coo Coo Nut Grove” and “Little Pancho Vanilla”.

The “Brown Sombrero” cantina is a reference to the Brown Derby restaurant in Los Angeles.

What I Like About This One:

The rendition of “Gaucho Serenade” at the start of the cartoon.

During a “La Cucaracha” musical number, one of the singers shakes the other two like castanets while a woman gets walloped by a pair of long johns after she walloped it for having lumps.

A chicken being blown up into a fried chicken after consuming one of Porky’s tamales.

The rendition of “In Caliente” that plays when the bullfight arena is first shown.

One of the spectators has a sombrero so large that the spectator sitting behind him has to deflate it with a pin to get a better view!

Slapsy Maxie being said to weigh 999 and ¾ pounds. In addition, the door releasing him opens up like a curtain despite having a lock on it.

Slapsy Maxie commenting on the matador, “Punchy Pancho”’s cape. “Nice piece of material, I think maybe”. Punchy Pancho immediately runs off after Slapsy Maxie disposes of the cape.

The announcer commenting on the action- while he is twirling a yo-yo with his eyes shut!

After Punchy Pancho ducks behind a fence for safety, one of the picadors riding a horse makes fun of Slapsy Maxie. In response, Slapsy Maxie sharpens his horns with what one would use for billiard sticks and charges at him, turning him and his horse into a centaur.

When Porky arrives in the ring, he obliviously asks Slapsy Maxie how many tamales he wants before realizing who he’s speaking to.

Porky tries to grab a nearby sword, which wilts at the sight of Slapsy Maxie.

Slapsy Maxie preventing Porky from leaving before he gets a whiff of Porky’s tamales and makes a very foolish mistake: consuming them all! (“Hot? Who’s afraid of hot?”). When the effects kick in, he runs off into the countryside in pain.

As Porky is congratulated for winning the bullfight, a small derby lands on his head, causing him to do an Oliver Hardy impression.
