Tweety's SOS
Directed by Friz Freleng

Animation by Ken Champin
Release Date:
September 22, 1951
Main Character(s):
Tweety and Sylvester, Granny
Summary:
Sylvester chases Tweety aboard an ocean liner. Granny is also onboard but her glasses prove to be a liability when she loses them.
That’s Not All, Folks:
The production number is 1190 and was released as a Merrie Melodie.
The cartoon was given a Blue Ribbon reissue. In the reissue, the original title card was inexplicably replaced with a new one.
In a way, Granny predates Velma Dinkley from Scooby-Doo in that they both prove to be practically blind without their glasses, although this is the only time this happens to Granny, while Velma losing her glasses would be a running gag throughout most Scooby-Doo incarnations.
This is the first time Tweety refers to Granny as such.
This is one of the first Warner cartoons I ever saw when I first got into these cartoons in 2013.
Part of the opening of Sylvester rummaging through the trash cans for food is reused animation from his first scene in his debut in “Life with Feathers”.
The “This Little Piggy” gag is reused here albeit with Tweety referring to Sylvester’s fingers respectively as “Eenie”, “Meanie”, and “Miney” and instead of “Well, what do you know? I ran out of piggies!”, the line is “Well, what do you know? No ‘Mo’!”
When Sylvester downs the bottle of seasick remedy a second time (unaware that Tweety poured nitro-glycerin in there), the bottle is erroneously seen back on the shelf during the shot where Tweety says, “That’s a nice putty tat! Dwink it all down!”
This is the only time where Granny takes the brunt of an explosion.
With this cartoon, Carl Stalling is officially back as the composer.
This is one of two times where Tweety pronounces “hypocrite” as “hypotwit”. He would do this again in 1959’s “Tweet and Lovely”.
One of the bottles seen in the first aid room reads, “Hawley and Pratt Salts”, which is of course a reference to Hawley Pratt.
I love the very pleasing rendition of “I Didn’t Slip, I Was Pushed” over the opening credits (this sounds like a title that would be right up Raymond Scott’s alley, since he always gave his tunes bizarre titles).
Favorite Scene:
Tweety offers Sylvester a piece of salt pork when the latter becomes seasick, which causes Sylvester to turn various different colors in response.
What Happens in This One:
Rummaging through the trash cans on the pier, Sylvester then sniffs the leftovers he collected, but is immediately revolted by their disgusting smell as he lets out a disgusted “Whew!” and tosses the lid he used to collect them aside before sadly walking off. Sitting depressed on a dock pole next to the ocean liner, his mood immediately changes to delight upon seeing Tweety swinging in his cage in one of the portholes and while reacting, he accidentally bumps his head. Tweety notices Sylvester rubbing his hand with an evil smile and realizes he tawt he taw a putty tat. After seeing he did taw a putty tat, Sylvester peeks into the porthole and says smugly, “Hello, breakfast”. Tweety shuts the porthole’s window on him, which causes Sylvester to fall into the water below. “You bad ol’ peekin’ tomcat!” Climbing back up to the ocean liner, Sylvester smacks away a crab that has hung on to his tail (animated by Manuel Perez).
Sylvester sneaks onto “Deck B” and hears chirping noises in Room 341 (animated by Perez). Sure enough, that is the room Tweety’s in, but just before Sylvester can exit with him, he opens the door only to be confronted by Granny, who has just come back to the room. “Ah-ha! Just what are you doing with my little birdie?” Sylvester nervously chuckles and pats Tweety on the head, pretending to act friendly. Tweety remarks, “Ooh, what a hypotwit!” Granny then starts attempting to attack Sylvester with her umbrella, “You beast, you killer! I’ll teach you to molest helpless little birdies!” (animated by Virgil Ross), with Tweety cheering her on, “Attagirl, Gwanny! Give him a hit in the head!” (animated by Perez)
Sylvester moves backwards on the sofa, using a pillow to shield himself from Granny’s umbrella attacks before he comes to the end of the sofa and falls off, before tripping backwards over a chair. He then hears Granny exclaim, “Oh, flibberty jibbit! I’ve dropped my glasses! I can’t see a thing without ‘em!” As she’s on the floor groping around for them, Sylvester kicks them under the sofa just as she’s about to touch them. “Oh, heavens to Betsy! Where are those cheaters?” (animated by Arthur Davis) Sylvester then starts to chase Tweety, who goes under the sofa and retrieves Granny’s glasses before running up to her shoulder while she’s standing up. Feeling Tweety run up her, she asks, “Oops! What’s goin’ on here!?” Tweety puts Granny’s glasses back over her eyes just as Sylvester attempts to leap at Tweety, making the first thing Granny see upon getting her glasses back being Sylvester leaping at her. “Ah ha! There you are! Skedaddle, ya durn old cat!” Sylvester makes a run for it off the gangplank but gets directly hit in the back of the head by Granny’s umbrella, which she has thrown towards him offscreen (animated by Ken Champin).
When the ocean liner departs, Granny and Tweety bid farewell to everyone on the dock as does Sylvester who has sneaked back on board and is hiding in the lifeboat. Later, as Tweety and Granny are asleep, Sylvester steals Granny’s glasses and paints a crudely-drawn Tweety on one of the lenses. Putting them back, Sylvester opens the cage and grabs Tweety who flies away while shouting, “Help!” This wakes Granny up, who starts calling, “Tweety! Tweety, where are you?” Unaware of what Sylvester did to her glasses, she puts them back on and conveniently moves her head in the direction of Tweety’s cage where the painted image is right in front of the cage. “Oh (chuckles), there you are. I thought that cat was after you again” (animated by Perez).
Sylvester chases Tweety up the mast and across the wires held by the mast. Just as Sylvester is attempting to walk across the wires, Tweety pulls on it causing it to vibrate and shake Sylvester loose, ending with him holding onto the wire, which prevents his fall. Tweety walks up and laments, “Aw, the poor putty tat. His fingers all caught in the wire. I will get you woose, putty tat”. He does the “This Little Piggy” bit by removing his fingers from the wire one by one, but refers to them in a different way: “Eenie”, “Meanie”, “Miney”. After Sylvester falls, Tweety realizes, “Well, what do you know? No ‘Mo’!” (animated by Davis)
Later, Tweety finds Sylvester hanging his head over the railing and asks, “Did you wose something, putty?” Sylvester looks at him with his face a sickly-looking shade of green, revealing that he’s become seasick. Tweety laughs, “That’s a good twick! I wish I could turn gween wike that!” He then tells Sylvester, “Aw, you need something on your tummy, putty tat. A nice, fat, juicy piece of talt pork!”, bringing out said salt pork. At this, Sylvester rapidly turns several different colors and sputters, “Salt p-p-por-” (animated by Champin up to here) and quickly runs off to the first aid room, where he feels better after downing some seasick remedy (animated by Davis).
A chase ensues, with them going below deck and opening a few doors. Upon coming up to the furnace, Tweety goes around it, but Sylvester mistakenly opens the furnace’s door and dashes right in! He then shoots out of one of the funnels, shouting in pain (animated by Perez).
Having landed in the water from shooting out of the funnel, Sylvester gets back on board and corners Tweety: “Ah! Now I got ya!” but just before he can grab him, Tweety pulls out a picture of a boat out at sea, and waves it back and forth while talking like he’s reading a poem, “It was a tewibble ‘torm. The boat wocked and wocked, up one wave and down another. Wocking the boat, wocking, wocking…” This causes Sylvester’s seasickness to come back. “Aw, the putty tat’s turnin’ gween again!” (animated by Champin)
This time, Tweety dashes into the first aid room before Sylvester and pours some nitro-glycerin into the seasick remedy. As Sylvester again drinks the seasick remedy (animated by Davis), Tweety tells him, “That’s a nice putty tat! Dwink it all down!” After Sylvester finishes, he realizes that every time he spits, he ends up spitting out explosions. Resuming the chase (animated by Perez), Sylvester attempts to spit explosions at Tweety, who dodges them all. He then skids to a stop upon seeing Granny, who has gotten wise to his earlier vandalizing of her glasses. “Ah ha! You’re still around, eh? Well, take that and that and that and that!”, attempting to hit him with her umbrella (animated by Davis).
Realizing what could happen if Granny manages to successfully hit Sylvester, Tweety warns, “No, no, no, no! Don’t hit him, Gwanny! You’ll be towwy!” She successfully hits him offscreen, causing an explosion that leaves her slightly disheveled and her umbrella completely destroyed. Sylvester, on the other hand, ends up zooming into the sky like a rocket and also bursts like one, before falling back down. The captain of the ship, watching him with binoculars, calmly says, “I tawt I taw a putty tat” before Sylvester directly lands on him very hard, leaving them both dazed (animated by Davis). At the wheel, Tweety and Granny confirm in unison, “You did! You did tee a putty tat!” (animated by Ross)
