Wacky Wildlife

Directed by Tex Avery

Release Date:

November 9, 1940

Main Character(s):

None

Summary:

Spot gags on animals in the wild.

That’s Not All, Folks:

The cartoon was given a Blue Ribbon reissue. The music over the opening credits as well as the narration said over the credits was kept in the reissue, and a black and white photo of the original title card also exists.

This is the first time where the line, “Well, I’ve been sick!” is used. This is said by a character who is unexpectedly weak or small. Avery would use it one more time at Warner Bros. in “Aviation Vacation” (1941) and he would use the line twice in two of his MGM cartoons, “Slap Happy Lion” and “King Size Canary” (both released in 1947).

What I Like About This One:

The narrator describing the way a timid little fawn drinks the water from a lake: “Daintily, she lowers her head and sips quietly.” But instead, she loudly slurps it up like a neanderthal.

A snake hypnotizing a bird to walk into its mouth, but just as he’s about to, the bird suddenly says, “If you think I’m going in THERE, you’re crazy!”

A skunk’s shadow holding its nose.

A bobcat and a tomcat greeting each other: “Hello, Tom”. “Hello, Bob”.

A pack rat pointing out the repetition of him constantly switching an egg with an acorn back and forth: “Monotonous, isn’t it?”

In the Everglades, a seemingly vicious alligator turns out to have a very small body. The narrator questions, “Say, what in the world happened to you?” The alligator replies, “Well, I’ve been sick!”

A lamb showing off a literal “leg of lamb” as in acting like someone lifting up her skirt.

When the narrator criticizes a pig wallowing in mud (“My goodness, isn’t he a dirty muddy sloppy mess?”), the pig grumpily retorts, “Alright, so I ain’t neat!”

In the swamps of Louisiana, all the ducks fly away from hunters except for one who refuses to fly away because he has the US flag on his side.

The narrator talking about a camel walking through the scorching hot desert for miles without stopping for a drink, but the camel talks back and retorts, “I don’t care what you say, I’m thirsty!”

In the last gag, a wild dog (who is so deranged to the point of pulling his hair out) is asked as to what makes him so wild. The seething wild dog answers, “WHAT MAKES ME WILD!? WHAT MAKES ME WILD!? LOOK!” It’s shown that loggers are cutting down the last standing tree in the forest.
