Daffy Duck, Porky Pig

Summary:

Daffy Duck and his wife are about to have kids. Daffy has been coping with the fact that he’s about to become a father by drinking slugs of corn juice. By the time Porky Pig arrives to congratulate him, he’s plastered. When a hungry buzzard kidnaps Daffy’s youngest, Daffy must save him.

That’s Not All, Folks:

This is the second cartoon to not have “Warner Bros.” in a banner above the shield.

As this was the last of two Daffy and Porky cartoons released in 1939, this uses the “starring Porky and Daffy” card from “Scalp Trouble”.

Clampett uses an alternate design of Daffy that he would only use again in “Porky’s Last Stand” (which is incidentally the first cartoon of 1940).

This is the last cartoon to use the 1938-1939 Looney Tunes intro and the last to use the original Porky’s drum ending before it used the redesigned Porky.

This is the first of several cartoons where Daffy is a henpecked husband. Later cartoons include “The Henpecked Duck” (1941), “His Bitter Half” (1950), “Stork Naked” (1955), and “Quackodile Tears” (1962).

The cartoon reuses animation from “Porky’s Poultry Plant” and “Chicken Jitters”.

An in-joke in the newspaper reads, “Bobo Cuts New Tooth”. “Bobo” was the nickname of animator Robert Cannon (who was in Clampett’s unit around this time).

What I Like About This One:

When Daffy hears his wife squawking “Rock a Bye Baby” while knitting a little sweater, she hides it behind her back before revealing that they’re about to be parents.

Porky becoming excited when reading that Daffy is expecting a blessed event, as they were kids together.

Daffy worriedly pacing back and forth, drinking corn juice in between and at one point, walking backwards to take another drink.

Mrs. Duck heating up her bottom by the fireplace to keep the eggs warm, but the eggs immediately hatch, saying, “DON’T DO IT! We’ll come out!”

When Daffy’s family walks out, Porky notices the youngest didn’t hatch yet, and picks it up. When it hatches, Porky asks him if he thinks Porky is his father. The youngest nods his head, but then says “No”.

Daffy’s wife sniffing Daffy’s breath and asking him if he’s been drinking. Daffy, in an offended tone, asks “Drinking? Drinking? Me, drinking?” but then says with a smile, “Yes”, before she hits him with her rolling pin.

When the buzzard arrives, he asks the youngest if he wants to go for a ride. He shakes his head, but then says “Yes”.

When the youngest says “Bye bye mama”, Mrs. Duck absentmindedly waves goodbye before she realizes that the buzzard has kidnapped him.

Daffy taking off to save his youngest, before going back for another drink of corn juice doing his “Hoo Hoo!” laugh and then taking off for real.

Daffy flying fast after the buzzard and stopping at one point to pant heavily.

Daffy stopping the buzzard by blowing a whistle and asking him where he’s going, but keeps hiccuping, causing him to repeat, “with that kid?” over and over again.

When the buzzard calls his friends for backup, Daffy takes the kid with him and drops him. Porky rescues the kid by sliding across the marsh and catching him.

When the buzzards have Daffy cornered in the barn, Porky and Mrs. Duck timidly creep in, only to discover that Daffy has gotten them all drunk with corn juice! Seeing his wife with her rolling pin, Daffy thinks he’ll be hit, but she instead shatters his jug.
